Winter Onsen in Kyushu: Snow, Road Risk and Safer Bases for 2026–27
Plan a winter onsen trip to Kyushu with road risks for Kurokawa, Kuju and Yufuin, plus lower-elevation Beppu and Ureshino options.

Kyushu is not snow-proof in winter. The decision is less about finding a town that never gets cold and more about whether your trip depends on a mountain road, a bus through bad weather or a railway route with room to change plans.
For winter 2026–27, exact road restrictions, snowfall and bus cancellations are still future conditions. Treat this as a planning guide, then check live information on the day. Kurokawa’s association specifically warns of snow and frozen roads from December to March and calls for winter tyres or chains. Yufuin’s tourism association also advises winter tyres, chains and arrival before dark when driving.

Kurokawa: beautiful in winter, but plan for the road first
Kurokawa’s official visitor FAQ describes the area as roughly 700 metres above sea level and warns that snowfall and road freezing are common from December through March. It tells drivers to prepare winter tyres or chains. A dry forecast in Fukuoka or Kumamoto is not enough to judge conditions in the mountains.
If you do not drive, the direct and cross-region buses remove the need for you to handle snow-covered roads, but they can still be delayed or cancelled. Check the live weather and transport page and the bus operator before departure. Avoid making Kurokawa the final night before a flight or long-distance train.
Kurokawa makes most sense when the winter atmosphere is part of the reason for going. Stay put rather than trying to combine it with Yufuin, Kuju and a city on the same day. The Kurokawa winter no-car guide covers the public-transport version in more detail.
Kuju and Sujiyu: do not treat the highland road as a casual detour
The roads around the Yamanami Highway, Makinoto Pass and Senomoto can require attention even when lower towns look clear. Oita Prefecture publishes road cameras and snow or ice response information for these areas. When a cold front brings snow, ice or traction restrictions, drop the mountain leg instead of trying to make up time on unfamiliar roads.
Check the prefecture’s snow and frozen-road page and its road restriction information. A navigation app showing an open route is not confirmation that conditions are suitable for your vehicle.
Yufuin: straightforward by rail, conditional by car
Yufuin’s station and central streets may feel less remote than Kurokawa, but the drive in can still cross exposed or elevated roads. YUFUINFO’s winter notice recommends winter tyres and carrying chains, and advises arriving before dark. If you do not have experience with icy roads, take the train and keep your plans around the station, town and chosen bath.
Do not add a drive from Yufuin across the Yamanami route to Kuju simply because the map makes it look close. In winter, that is a separate road decision. See the Yufuin day-bath guide if you want to keep the visit town-centred.
Beppu and Ureshino are useful lower-risk alternatives
Beppu’s central baths give you a complete onsen visit without needing to go up into the higher districts. That does not mean every road in Beppu is free of winter risk: the prefecture notes that elevated parts of the city can see snow or ice. Keep the plan in the lower city and check conditions before any hill or mountain outing. The municipal bath guide helps build a town-based day.
For western Kyushu, Ureshino offers another trip structure: take the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, then use local transport or a taxi to reach the hot-spring town. Before setting out on a winter drive
- Ask the rental company whether winter tyres are fitted to the actual vehicle you will collect. Four-wheel drive is not a substitute for tyres suited to snow and ice.
- Check road cameras, restrictions and local notices for the route itself, not only the forecast where you start.
- Keep mountain driving in daylight and decide in advance which town you will use if the route becomes unsuitable.
- Leave extra time for bus disruption. A bus avoids the need to drive, but it cannot guarantee service through a storm.
