Kyoto Sento Saunas: Dry Heat, Mist Rooms and the Baths Around Them

Kyoto’s association lists 71 sento with a sauna and 10 with mist sauna. For both types, start with Asahi-yu or Komachi-yu; Uzumasa has mist heat.

The useful question is not simply whether a Kyoto sento has a sauna. The Kyoto Sento Association currently lists 71 facilities with a sauna tag and 10 with a mist-sauna tag. A better shortlist starts with the kind of heat you want, then checks for a cold bath, an outdoor tub and hours that fit your day.

Pick the sauna setup first

What you wantA place to startWhat the official listing shows
Conventional sauna plus mist sauna, with an outdoor bathAsahi-yu (Minami Ward)Sauna, mist sauna, cold bath and outdoor bath; open until 12:30 a.m. most days, with an 8 a.m. Sunday opening. Closed Mondays.
Both sauna types in west ShimogyoKomachi-yuSauna, mist sauna, cold bath and outdoor bath; open until 1 a.m., with a Sunday morning opening. Closed Tuesdays.
Mist sauna and cold bath; no conventional sauna tagUzumasa OnsenThe association lists a mist sauna and cold bath. It also lists a Sunday morning bathing session.

These are facility-listing tags, not a promise about temperature, session length or which rooms are open at every visit. In particular, the absence of a conventional-sauna tag is not proof that a facility has no such equipment. Confirm details with the bathhouse if one specific room is the reason for your trip.

Mist sauna is its own option

A mist sauna uses humid, vapor-filled heat rather than the dry or far-infrared rooms found at some bathhouses. That gives you another way to choose a sento, but the association’s listings do not publish a standard temperature or humidity for comparison. Avoid treating “mist” as a guarantee that a room is cooler or suitable for a longer session.

Uzumasa Onsen is a useful example if you specifically want a mist room and a cold bath. The current listing gives regular hours of 3 p.m. to midnight, plus a Sunday morning session from 7 to 11 a.m.; it closes on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. It is in Ukyo Ward, so it makes more sense for a western Kyoto itinerary than as a detour from the station.

When the cold bath or outdoor air matters more

The association’s current search pages list 78 bathhouses with a cold bath and 18 with an outdoor bath. A cold bath is a separate feature from the sauna itself; the tag does not tell you its temperature or whether it is refreshed in a particular way. If you prefer not to use cold water, there is no need to build your visit around it.

For an outdoor bath alongside two sauna types, Asahi-yu in Minami Ward and Komachi-yu are clear options in the current listings. The choice between them is mostly geographic and practical: Asahi-yu is south of central Kyoto and opens earlier on Sundays, while Komachi-yu is in Nishishichijo and stays open until 1 a.m. Neither is automatically the better pick if the other is much closer to your hotel.

Check the total, not just the bathhouse sign

The association’s bathing guide lists standard adult admission at ¥550. It also says towels and soap can be purchased if you did not bring them. That basic price does not establish whether a particular sauna costs extra, whether towel rental is available or whether there are separate rules for each bathing area. Ask the facility or check its current listing before you set a budget.

Ordinary sento features do not establish that the water is a legally defined natural hot spring. If the distinction matters, our sento and onsen explainer covers what the labels do and do not tell you. For a location-first shortlist, see sento near Kyoto Station.
