Sakyo Ward Sento: Pick a Bath Near Your Last Stop
Find a sento near Ginkakuji, Shimogamo, Ichijoji or Sanjo Keihan, with opening times and weekly closures to help plan your last stop.
In Sakyo Ward, a bath that fits your route is more useful than one that looks best on a citywide list. Ginsui-yu opens at 1:30 p.m. after a walk around Ginkakuji; Kamogawa-yu has an 8 a.m. Sunday opening near Shimogamo; Higashiyama-yu Onsen stays open until 12:30 a.m. near Kyoto University. Ichijoji has three different closing times, while Magobashi-yu is a short walk from Sanjo Keihan.
The citywide directory lists all 11 Sakyo baths. Use the area notes here to narrow your route, and the association’s current Sakyo listings to confirm the day’s details.
Match the bath to your day
| Where you are | Start with | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Ginkakuji or the Philosopher’s Path | Ginsui-yu | Opens at 1:30 p.m.; closed Fridays; listed until 11:30 p.m. |
| Shimogamo or the Botanical Gardens | Kamogawa-yu | Sunday hours begin at 8 a.m.; regular hours run until 1 a.m.; closed Tuesdays. |
| Kyoto University or Hyakumanben | Higashiyama-yu Onsen | Open until 12:30 a.m.; closed Fridays. |
| Ichijoji ramen streets | Kirara-yu before dinner, Suzunari-yu if you need a later close | Kirara-yu closes at 10 p.m.; Suzunari-yu at 11 p.m. Kirara-yu has no regular closing day; Suzunari-yu closes Monday and the second Tuesday of the month. |
| Sanjo Keihan | Magobashi-yu | About a three-minute walk from Sanjo Keihan and Keihan Sanjo; listed until 11 p.m. |
A Sunday morning around Shimogamo
Kamogawa-yu is the clearest Sakyo choice if you want to bathe before sightseeing. Its current listing gives 2 p.m.–1 a.m. on regular days and 8 a.m.–1 a.m. on Sundays, with Tuesdays off. Check the current listing before setting your schedule.
Eisei-yu is another Shimogamo-area option, open 3–11:30 p.m. and closed Mondays. It is a simpler evening fit, not an early-morning alternative.
After Ginkakuji or the Philosopher’s Path
Ginsui-yu’s 1:30 p.m. opening can work after a morning walk, without waiting for the usual 3 p.m. opening time. It is closed Fridays and runs until 11:30 p.m. The association listing shows a sauna, cold bath and several standard tubs, but does not list towel rental or toiletries for sale. Bring your own towel and washing items if you do not want to check at the door.
Late options near the university
Higashiyama-yu Onsen is listed from 3 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., with Friday closure. Nearby Shinonome-yu, Ginza-yu and Heian-yu close at midnight; each has a different weekly day off—Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Pick the one that is open and on your way back, rather than crossing the neighborhood for a small facility difference.
Heian-yu’s listing includes a late-night tag, but its posted hours end at midnight. The tag does not extend the stated closing time. Higashiyama-yu’s listing also notes a natural-groundwater flow-through cold bath; that describes the cold bath, not a legally classified natural hot spring. For the water-source distinction, see the Kyoto natural-onsen guide.
Ichijoji: plan around the restaurant queue
Kirara-yu opens at 2:30 p.m. and closes at 10 p.m. It has no regular closing day, which makes it the straightforward pick if you want to bathe before dinner. If you plan to eat ramen first, allow for a queue: a long wait can leave little time before closing.
Suzunari-yu is open until 11 p.m. but closes on Mondays and the second Tuesday of the month. Daikoku-yu also closes at 11 p.m., but is shut Wednesdays and Thursdays; the association lists both a standard sauna and a mist sauna. Those two sauna styles are its main distinction in the area, not a reason to detour from another part of Kyoto.
Keep your expectations local
The association’s current Sakyo category lists 11 baths and no outdoor-bath tag among them. If an open-air bath is essential, compare other wards in the Kyoto sento directory instead of searching Sakyo’s list for a feature it does not currently show. “Onsen” in a bathhouse name is not proof of natural hot-spring water, either.
The standard adult bathing charge is ¥550, but towels and toiletries vary by bathhouse. See the association’s bathing guide for current general rules. For a wider range of early openings, the Kyoto morning sento guide compares options across the city; it is not a substitute for checking the route from your hotel.
