Getting to Kurokawa Onsen Without a Car: Buses from Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Aso

Reach Kurokawa Onsen by reservation-only coach from Fukuoka or the Kyushu Odan Bus from Kumamoto and Aso. Plan the return seat before you go.

Kurokawa Onsen is a mountain village, not a rail stop with frequent onward connections. Without a car, choose your approach by where you are already travelling: take the direct coach from Fukuoka, or use the Kyushu Odan Bus from Kumamoto or Aso. Book the return leg at the same time. Missing a bus here can cost most of an afternoon, not just a short wait.

From Fukuoka: direct, but reservation-only

The Fukuoka–Kurokawa coach connects Tenjin, Hakata Bus Terminal and Fukuoka Airport International Terminal with Kurokawa via Hita and Tsuetate. Sanko Bus says the route is seat-reservation only; bookings open one month before travel, and departures from Kurokawa must be booked by 7 pm the previous day. Check the timetable and the correct airport terminal stop before setting off.

This is the simplest route if you are based in Fukuoka, but there are only a few departures a day. Compare the arrival with your inn’s check-in and dinner cutoff. For the return, choose a seat before you begin your stay rather than waiting to see how much time you have left on the morning of departure.

From Kumamoto or Aso: take the Kyushu Odan Bus

The Kyushu Odan Bus runs between Kumamoto and Beppu via Kumamoto Airport, Aso Station, Kurokawa Onsen and Yufuin. That makes Kurokawa a useful stop on a one-way route: continue to Yufuin or Beppu instead of backtracking to Kumamoto if that is where your trip is headed.

The current Sanko timetable page shows three Kumamoto-to-Beppu services stopping at Kurokawa, with arrivals listed at 10:15 am, 11:15 am and 3 pm.

Its displayed schedule is marked as revised October 1, 2025; the fare table is marked revised August 1, 2026. These are operator-listed timetable details, not a guarantee for every future date. Confirm your travel day’s service, seat availability and fare on the Sanko Bus timetable page before making a connection.

From Aso Station, the same route calls at the station before Kurokawa, so there is no need to travel back to Kumamoto first. Service is limited, however. Check the direction and departure time carefully: the bus continues across the mountains toward Yufuin and Beppu in one direction and back toward Aso and Kumamoto in the other.

At Kurokawa, sort out your bags before visiting a bath

The bus stop is within the wider hot-spring area, but that does not put every inn on level ground or a short walk away. The village has slopes, and some ryokan are outside the centre. Ask your accommodation about pickup, bag storage and the return transfer to the stop before you arrive. Do not assume that a taxi will be waiting.

The Nyuto Tegata bath pass covers three participating outdoor baths, or two baths and one eligible food or souvenir item, and is valid for six months. It is a day-use product; staying guests can use their own ryokan bath under that property’s terms.

Participating inns set their own day-use hours and may limit admission for capacity or maintenance. Check the onsen association’s pass page for day-use status on your visit date.

For bus travel in snow season, pickup arrangements and road conditions need extra attention. The winter visit guide explains the seasonal risks. If you are unsure whether to make a day visit or stay overnight, compare the available time in this trip-planning guide.
