Early-Morning and Late-Night Baths in Kumamoto City

An early bath can be handy before a flight or a drive towards Aso. A late one is a different problem: the bath may still be open after buses have stopped. In Kumamoto City, these three schedules are easy to confuse, so it helps to separate the opening hours of the whole facility from the hours when its baths are actually available.

If you want to bathe at 6 a.m.
Peaceful Yu-Yu is the straightforward choice. Its public bath is listed as open from 6:00 a.m. to midnight, and adult admission is ¥550 when you bring your own towel. It has sauna and other bathing facilities, but the official bath page does not describe it as a natural hot spring. Check the operator’s latest notice before an early start, especially if a specific pool or sauna is essential.
The former Tsurunoyu Kumamoto Inter branch used to be another early option. It closed under that name on August 31, 2026, and is currently being renovated. Reopening as Kame-no-Yu by HATAGO INN is scheduled for November 1. The new facility’s advertised 6:00 a.m. start is still pre-opening information as of this check date.
For a natural spring after midnight
Batten no Yu stays open until 2:00 a.m. and is listed by Kumamoto City as a natural hot-spring facility. Adult admission is ¥750, or ¥550 if you bring shampoo and conditioner. Its late hours are useful after dinner, but the return trip deserves more thought than the soak: check the last bus and be ready to use a taxi if public transport no longer works.
Do not assume you can arrive just before closing. The facility’s public page gives the closing time, but does not clearly state a last bathing admission time. Call ahead if you will arrive late.
Yulax is not a 24-hour bath
Yulax is often described as open 24 hours, but that refers to the facility. Its onsen baths and sauna operate from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. the following day.
Cleaning closes the bathing area from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. The building’s overnight options and admission plans are separate from bath access, so check the plan details if you expect to sleep there or use a lounge.
One schedule change is coming soon: Sanko Bus has announced a timetable revision for October 1, 2026. If your bath visit depends on a first or last bus, use the operator’s date-specific search rather than relying on older trip times.
The city’s post-earthquake bathing support list is not a tourist discount. It is limited to eligible residents and requires the identification described by Kumamoto City; visitors should budget for the normal admission prices above. The same September 4 list is useful as a current-status check: it showed Peaceful Yu-Yu, Yulax and Batten no Yu operating on their listed schedules, while the old Tsurunoyu site remained closed for renovation.
For a car-free route, Yulax is the easiest of these three to pair with rail: it is about a five-minute walk from Heisei Station and the Seyocho bus stop. Peaceful Yu-Yu and Batten no Yu sit farther east, and a 2 am closing time does not extend the bus timetable. Check the return leg before deciding that a late soak fits your hotel location.
