Chitose Onsen in Kawasaki: A Local Bathhouse with Real Black Hot Spring Water
Chitose Onsen's black spring costs ¥570 to enter, or ¥820 with sauna. See the seven-minute walk from Musashi-Shinjo and weekly closing day.
Chitose Onsen feels more like a well-designed neighborhood bathhouse than a sprawling day spa. That is the point: the adult entry fee is ¥570, and the outdoor bath uses naturally dark spring water drawn from several hundred metres underground. Add the sauna for ¥250 if you want it; there is no need to buy a long-stay package just to take a soak.
The black water is the reason to come
The facility describes its spring as an alkaline sodium-bicarbonate mineral spring, officially recognized for bathing in Kanagawa Prefecture. Its dark colour comes from organic material in the underground strata. The stone-garden-inspired outdoor bath is the clearest place to appreciate that black water.
Not every pool uses the spring. Chitose says its plain baths and showers use purified soft water; the indoor area also has a carbonated bath, a silky bath and jet baths. They are useful parts of the visit, but they are not all natural hot-spring pools.
The building has a little more character than a standard sento, too. Stained glass, a Hokusai-inspired tile mural and William Morris wallpaper bring a Taisho-era feel to the changing and waiting areas. Upstairs, the rest hall includes a small kids’ space.
Entry and sauna prices
| Option | Price |
|---|---|
| Adult bath entry | ¥570 |
| Sauna add-on | ¥250 |
| Adult entry with sauna | ¥820 |
| Junior-high student | ¥470 |
| Elementary-school student | ¥250 |
| Young child | ¥130 |
The sauna is optional, so a quick spring visit stays inexpensive. Chitose also gives one sauna stamp per visit; five stamps earn one weekday sauna visit free. The fee page lists a children’s day on the fourth Saturday of each month, when children up to elementary-school age enter free with an adult, up to two children per adult. Check the facility’s notice board before relying on a special-day offer.
The regular child fares are ¥470 for junior-high students, ¥250 for elementary-school students and ¥130 for younger children. A separate standing rule lets each adult bring up to two young children in free; the age categories and the fourth-Saturday offer are not interchangeable, so check the fee page if your family’s total depends on a free ticket.
Getting there, and when it is open
Musashi-Shinjo on the JR Nambu Line is the simplest approach: the walk takes about seven minutes. Kawasaki City Bus and Tokyu Bus also stop at Jido Koen-mae, roughly a minute from the entrance. There are ten parking spaces.
The hours are less uniform than a quick glance at a map might suggest. Chitose opens from 2 p.m. to midnight on weekdays, and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. It closes every Friday. If you are building a late-evening plan, remember that the weekday midnight close does not apply to weekends.
That makes the weekday evening useful for a short soak after work, while a weekend visit needs an earlier finish. There is no reliable last-admission time published on the service page, so do not plan to arrive just before closing.
For a longer spa session with bedrock bathing, compare Mizonokuchi Onsen Kirari. If you are deciding between the city’s main day-bath options, the Kawasaki family onsen guide lays out the age rules in one place.
