One Night in Hirugami Onsen: A Two-Day Itinerary by Bus

Plan one night in Hirugami Onsen around the 2026 Iida–Nakatsugawa bus, the Star Village night tour, seasonal closures and the early-morning market.

The Achi River near Hirugami Onsen

One night is enough for Hirugami Onsen if you arrive before lunch, soak before dinner and have a confirmed ride back from the evening star tour. The harder part is transport: the village has no train station, its newer Iida–Nakatsugawa bus runs only in part of the year, and the night-tour shuttle is reserved for overnight guests. Build the day around those connections first; add blossoms or a longer walk only if the timing still works.

Day one: arrive early, then keep the evening simple

For a no-car trip using the Iida–Nakatsugawa sightseeing bus, aim for its late-morning arrival. From Nakatsugawa, the bus leaves at 10:25 a.m. and reaches Hirugami at 11:13. From Iida, the morning departure is 9:00 a.m., arriving at 9:37. The later services reach Hirugami at 4:28 p.m. from Nakatsugawa or 2:52 p.m. from Iida; those can work for a quiet overnight, but leave little time to settle in before the night tour.

TimePlanWhy this order works
11:15–12:30 p.m.Drop bags with your inn if it agrees, then have lunchDon’t assume the bus stop has luggage storage; ask your lodging first.
12:30–2:30 p.m.Take a short riverside or hot-spring-town walkKeep this flexible if you have a long transfer or the weather turns.
2:30–4:30 p.m.Check in, rest and take your first bathThis gives you time to change and eat before leaving for the ropeway.
Before the booked tourHave dinner or confirm the inn’s meal arrangementAsk whether dinner is served early enough, or whether a meal can be arranged around the event.
EveningTake the reserved transfer to the Star Village night tour, then return to the innThe venue is outside the walkable hot-spring area; an ordinary daytime bus is not a late-night return plan.

The table assumes an arrival around 11 a.m. If your bus gets in later, skip the walk rather than compressing check-in, dinner and the tour. The town’s paid night-tour bus is for accommodation guests and must be reserved. Confirm its pickup point and return time with your inn before buying the event ticket. If no suitable shuttle is available, arrange a taxi or choose an evening without the ropeway program.

The 2026–27 Star Village season is scheduled for 11 April 2026 to 22 March 2027, with maintenance breaks on 18 May–17 July, 24 September–9 October, 16 November–18 December 2026 and 12–22 January 2027. As of 28 September 2026, the event is in the September–October break; the next scheduled operating date is 10 October, subject to the official calendar and weather.

Outside winter, the uphill gondola runs 5–8 p.m.; the programme ends at 9 p.m.

Under the December–March winter schedule, gondola hours are 6–7:30 p.m. and the programme ends at 8:30 p.m. Check the night-tour itinerary guide for ticket and event details before choosing a date.

Day two: market first, then choose a realistic departure

The morning market is open every day, but its start time shifts with the season: 6–8 a.m. from April through October, and 6:30–8 a.m. from November through March. It’s an easy early stop before breakfast or checkout. Leave time to return to your inn, collect your bags and get to the bus stop; don’t plan to board straight from the market.

The 2026 trial bus gives two useful departure choices from Hirugami. Toward Nakatsugawa, it leaves at 9:37 a.m. or 2:52 p.m.; toward Iida, it leaves at 11:13 a.m. or 4:28 p.m. For a relaxed second morning, the afternoon departure is usually the more workable option, provided your inn can hold your luggage and your onward train or coach connection leaves enough margin.

If you are coming from Matsumoto, there is a separate direct shuttle, but it is only for guests staying at participating Hirugami accommodations and, from April 2026, is sold as a round trip. It needs advance booking and may not run unless the minimum group size is met. Confirm the operating decision and pickup time before arranging the rest of your journey. For a broader stay-versus-day-trip comparison, see whether to stay overnight in Hirugami.

Add a seasonal stop only when the transport fits

SeasonWhat changesHow to adjust
Spring peach-blossom seasonThe 2026 tourism guide places blossoms around Hirugami in early to mid-April and the Tsukikawa “Peach Blossom Village” later, around mid-April to early May. Bloom dates shift with weather, and the two areas are not a short stroll apart.Check the live bloom report. Tsukikawa is about a 10-minute drive from Hirugami; use the seasonal shuttle only if that year’s festival schedule confirms it, or arrange another ride.
April–November night-tour datesThe regular uphill gondola window is 5–8 p.m.; the program ends at 9 p.m. Several maintenance breaks interrupt the season.Choose an operating date first, then check your inn’s dinner and reserved night-tour bus. A cloudy sky can limit the stars even if the event still runs.
December–MarchThe night tour switches to winter hours and the Iida–Nakatsugawa trial bus pauses from 1 December through 19 March each year. Winter conditions can also affect roads and transfers.Use an accommodation’s confirmed transport or a pre-arranged taxi. Don’t copy the autumn timetable into a winter booking.

Spring is the season most likely to tempt you into adding one more stop. The tourist bureau’s 2026 guide says the Tsukikawa blossoms are later than those in Hirugami itself and warns that the timing moves with the weather. During the festival, a separate paid shuttle may operate between Hirugami and the blossom area; check the current year’s dates and reservation rules rather than assuming it runs throughout the season.

If flowers are the priority, arrive the previous evening or skip the night tour. Trying to fit a distant blossom area, a bath, dinner and the ropeway into one afternoon leaves too little slack for traffic or a delayed transfer. If the stars are the main reason for staying, keep the daytime plan close to the inn and treat the sky as a bonus rather than a guarantee.

Pick the inn for the part of the evening you cannot improvise

For a night-tour visit, confirm three details before you book: whether the inn can arrange the shuttle, when dinner is served and how late you can return. A guest-room open-air bath makes it easier to bathe after the event, but it doesn’t solve transport or dinner timing. Compare the Hirugami Sansui stay guide and Kurotake private-onsen guide for room-bath arrangements; check the exact room plan rather than assuming every room includes a private bath.

Without the night tour, the trip can be simpler: arrive in the afternoon, check in, take a bath before dinner, and spend the morning at the market before your bus. That version is also easier to adapt if the weather is poor or the seasonal bus schedule does not match your dates.
