Where to Stay in Yunokawa Onsen: Tram Stop, Seafront or Airport Side?
Choose a Yunokawa stay near the tram, seafront or airport side by city access, hotel bathing and your next morning’s transfer.

Yunokawa Onsen is a district, not a single compact inn street. Lodging runs from the tram corridor to the coast and farther toward the Tropical Botanical Garden. Choose the area around what you will do after checkout: return to central Hakodate, stay at the hotel for breakfast and another bath, or head toward the airport.
Near the tram: the easiest base for Hakodate city
If most of your sightseeing is in central Hakodate, look first at hotels within an easy walk of the tram. The line runs from Yunokawa through Goryokaku Park and Hakodate Station toward the western part of the city; the ride from Hakodate-ekimae to Yunokawa-onsen takes about 30 minutes, with a current adult fare of ¥290.
This area is especially practical if you will make the city trip more than once. You can use the tram without planning a hotel shuttle, and the Yunokawa Onsen footbath is beside the stop. Still check the hotel’s entrance location: “near the tram” can mean different things when you are pulling a suitcase over winter pavement.
By the coast: choose it when you will stay in
The seafront is the stronger match if the hotel’s bath, ocean view, dinner and breakfast are the point of the overnight. You trade a little more thought about the last leg of the transfer for more time at the property. That trade only pays off if you arrive early enough to use the bath and are not leaving at dawn.
Do not use the view as a shortcut for judging the spring. The cooperative’s hotel directory distinguishes between once-through, recirculated and mixed systems at member properties. Ask about the exact bath or room you are booking; the same district label does not mean every tub has the same water or treatment.
Toward the botanical garden and airport: useful for a flight, not automatically best for town
The eastern side is worth checking for a first or last night, especially if your hotel is close to one of the airport bus stops. From Hakodate Airport, routes 96 and 5 reach the Yunokawa Onsen / Tropical Botanical Garden area; routes 7A and 7B stop by the tram line. Their ride times and fares differ, so compare the stop nearest your hotel rather than picking the fastest line in isolation.
This side is less compelling if you expect to ride the tram into central Hakodate several times a day and will not use the hotel’s bathing facilities. Count the repeated journeys, not just the one arrival trip. And because Hakodate Bus is switching to its winter timetable on October 1, 2026, check the date-specific route search before booking around an early flight.
A quick location check before you book
Open the hotel’s access page and map its entrance against the tram stop, the nearest bus stop and your next morning’s destination. If the hotel advertises a shuttle, confirm whether it is for overnight guests, whether it must be reserved, and when it runs. The Yunokawa access guide compares the main airport and station routes; if you are still deciding whether to stay at all, read day bath or overnight in Yunokawa.
