How to Get to Lake Toya from Sapporo and New Chitose Airport

Compare the direct Sapporo–Toyako bus with the JR route via Toya Station, plus the New Chitose transfer. Fares, journey times and the final bus connection.

There are two useful ways to reach Toyako Onsen from Sapporo: a reserved direct bus into the hot-spring district, or the JR train to Toya Station followed by a local bus. From New Chitose Airport, the usual public-transport route runs through Minami-Chitose and Toya Station. That last bus matters; Toya Station is not beside the lakeside hotels.

From Sapporo: direct bus for fewer transfers, JR for rail connections

Direct Donan Bus, Sapporo–Toyako OnsenPublished terms
Adult fare¥3,700 one way (about HK$186 / NT$756)
Journey timeAbout 2 hours 45 minutes
BookingReservation required; online bookings close 2 hours before departure

The bus can be delayed by road or weather conditions, but drops you in the resort area without a transfer at Toya Station.

JR route via Toya StationPublished terms
Local bus to the onsenAbout 26 minutes; ¥400 one way (about HK$20 / NT$82)
JR limited express seatingReserved seating only from March 14, 2026; no non-reserved car

Take the Limited Express Hokuto to Toya Station, then a Donan Bus local service or taxi into town. Add the train-to-bus wait to your plan.

With bulky bags or a hotel near the bus terminal, the direct coach is usually the simpler arrival. JR fits better when Toya Station lies naturally on a wider rail itinerary, or when you want to continue toward Hakodate or Noboribetsu. Confirm which local stop is closest to your hotel: buses continue past the terminal toward Sakuramachi, Chuo-dori, Motomachi and Higashimachi on some services.

From New Chitose Airport: connect at Minami-Chitose

The standard rail route is New Chitose Airport to Minami-Chitose, then a limited express to Toya Station. The Toyako Onsen Tourist Association estimates the airport-to-Toya rail leg at about 1 hour 30 minutes. Continue by local bus or taxi for the final stretch to the lake. The bus adds roughly 26 minutes, plus whatever time you spend waiting for it.

That estimate is not door-to-door. Check the actual train connection and the last Toya Station bus on your travel date, especially after an afternoon flight. If the bus has already left, a taxi may be the practical fallback; staying in Sapporo or near the airport for the first night is another option when the connection is too tight.

The direct bus is not an airport service

The direct coach leaves from Sapporo and terminates at Toyako Onsen. It does not pick up at New Chitose Airport. Going to Sapporo first just to catch it usually adds an unnecessary leg when the JR route via Minami-Chitose is available.

Schedules, fares and reservation cut-offs can change. Check the Donan Bus Sapporo route and Toya Station–Toyako Onsen route close to departure. JR’s current English guide also explains the reserved-seat rules for limited express trains.

When you have your hotel booked, use its exact name to check the stop rather than choosing “Toyako Onsen” in a route search. The guide to Toyako’s accommodation areas explains how the central, east and west sections differ. If the main question is whether the extra transfer and evening schedule make an overnight stay worthwhile, compare the day-trip and overnight options.
