Day-Use Baths in Awara Onsen: Saintpia, Seifuso, Matsuya Sensen and Mimatsu
Compare day-use baths at Saintpia Awara, Seifuso, Matsuya Sensen and Mimatsu, including opening hours, adult prices and access notes.
The best Awara Onsen bath for a day trip depends largely on what time you arrive. Saintpia Awara is open from 10am to 11pm and welcomes walk-in bathers, while the ryokan options start later and can limit day use when the inn is busy. The baths also differ in what your admission covers, so compare access and facilities rather than the spring-town name alone.
Compare the four baths
| Facility | Adult admission | Typical day-use hours | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saintpia Awara | ¥600 | 10am–11pm; last entry 10:30pm | Easiest to reach and the latest-closing option; shampoo and body wash provided |
| Seifuso | ¥1,500 | 4pm–8pm | Garden open-air bath and indoor bath; mini and bath towels included |
| Matsuya Sensen | ¥1,500 | The Awara tourism association lists 4pm–7pm | Several pools, but day-use admission can depend on occupancy; call first |
| Mimatsu | ¥1,500 | 2pm–6pm; last entry 5pm | Two large public baths with a garden setting; check its maintenance calendar |
Children’s rates differ: Saintpia charges ¥360 for school-age children and ¥240 for children aged three to six; Seifuso lists ¥700 for children through primary-school age, Matsuya Sensen ¥800 for school-age children and younger, and Mimatsu ¥1,000 for children. Reconfirm the age bands when checking a facility’s current terms.
If you arrive before late afternoon, start with Saintpia
Saintpia is the practical choice for a morning or early-afternoon arrival. From Awara-Yunomachi Station on the Echizen Railway, it is about a five-minute walk. From JR Awaraonsen Station, take the Tojinbo Line bus and get off at the Saintpia Awara stop. The public bath is open until 11pm, with last entry at 10:30pm, so it can also work after a day at Tojinbo or dinner in town.
The facility has two bathing areas, Ten-no-Yu and Chi-no-Yu, which switch between the men’s and women’s sides each week. Check the current arrangement rather than assuming you can use both during one visit. The baths include a sauna and cold plunge, and the building has a Japanese-style room that serves as a free rest area when it is not booked.
Saintpia’s spring is listed as a calcium-sodium chloride spring at 43.6°C and pH 7.8. Its entry rules are unusually clear: guests with tattoos are not admitted, and children aged seven or older—or at least 120cm tall—cannot bathe with the opposite sex. Bring a towel or buy one there; shampoo and body wash are supplied.
Ryokan day baths begin later—and may not take walk-ins
Seifuso accepts day bathers from 4 to 8 p.m. for ¥1,500, including a small towel and bath towel. Bath-only visitors can ask at reception without booking ahead. The ticket covers the first-floor indoor bath and garden open-air bath, but not Komorebi no Yu. Some holidays are excluded; payment is cash only.
Matsuya Sensen has a large bathing area with several pool types. It mixes springs No. 14, 43 and 64; the listed combined source is 29.3°C with a pH of 7.9. Its public baths use recirculation.
The tourism association lists day use from 4 to 7 p.m. Overnight guests have priority, and the inn has suspended day use before. Call before making a long trip for a bath.
Mimatsu normally takes day visitors from 2pm to 6pm, with last entry at 5pm, for ¥1,500 per adult and ¥1,000 per child. Its two public baths, Taiyoden and Meigetsuden, rotate between men and women. The hotel has announced whole-property maintenance closures for 30 September, 1–6 October and 13 October 2026; day bathing will not be available on those dates. Check its latest notice before travelling, as these dates can change.
Choose by arrival time, not by brochure photo
Before 2pm, Saintpia is the dependable option; the ryokan baths are either not open yet or have a narrow admission window. Between 2pm and 4pm, Mimatsu may be available on a normal operating day. After 4pm, Seifuso and Matsuya Sensen become alternatives if they are accepting day guests. After 8pm, Saintpia is the only one of these four with regular hours still in effect.
Awara-Yunomachi Station is the simplest arrival point for the town centre and Saintpia. JR Awaraonsen Station is served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen; local buses connect it with the hot-spring district. A ryokan shuttle advertised for overnight guests should not be assumed to take day visitors. Check the return bus before a late soak, particularly if you are not staying overnight.
Which station works better?
Use Awara-Yunomachi Station if Saintpia or the central hot-spring streets are your destination; it is about a five-minute walk to Saintpia. JR Awaraonsen Station is the Shinkansen stop, with buses onward to the district. The ryokan baths sit beyond the station-to-town transfer, so their overnight-guest shuttle should not be treated as day-use transport. If you have only half a day, make the bath fit the arrival time: Saintpia covers the widest window, while the hotel baths need a later start and an earlier finish.
These baths do not share one spring profile
Saintpia publishes a 43.6°C calcium-sodium chloride spring at pH 7.8. Seifuso and Mimatsu list their own spring information, while Matsuya Sensen uses a blend of wells 14, 43 and 64, with source water at 29.3°C and pH 7.9; its public bathing system is recirculated. Source temperature is not the same as the temperature of the bath, and one inn’s figures should not be copied onto another facility just because all are in Awara Onsen.
For tattoos, Saintpia explicitly refuses admission. The ryokan pages checked here do not give equally clear rules, so ask each property before travelling rather than assuming silence means tattoos are accepted.
