Nine Day-Use Onsen in Ehime’s Nanyo Region, Compared
Choose among nine Nanyo baths by route: Poppo Onsen is at Matsumaru Station, Tsushima Atsuta is roadside, and Yurari Uchiumi uses seawater.
Checked: September 27, 2026 Southern Ehime is not a compact onsen-hopping town. The baths below run from Ozu and Seiyo to Uwajima, Matsuno and Ainan; driving between clusters is more realistic than trying to collect them all in a day. For a rail-based stop, start with Poppo Onsen. If you are driving the coast, the Ainan baths make more sense. The recently rebuilt Tsushima Atsuta Onsen is the practical large-facility option near the Uwajima–Tsushima route.
For a separate comparison of the two remote Tsushima-area baths, see Haraigawa versus Yamaidashi; the Toyo-region guide covers eastern Ehime rather than this rural southern cluster.

What changes the choice
For a train-and-bath stop, Poppo Onsen is the outlier. It occupies Matsumaru Station on the JR Yodo Line, so there is no extra local transfer to solve. “Nameri-no-Yu” and “Meiji-no-Yu” are gender-separated and switch sides on odd and even dates; check which one will be open to you that day. The station-side footbath is free if you only have time for a brief stop.
For a larger facility, use the new Tsushima Atsuta complex—not old references to Tsushima Yasuragi no Sato. The new roadside station opened on April 23, 2026. The current city material lists a ¥850 adult bath ticket and closing days on the first and third Tuesday. The bath area includes indoor and outdoor pools and several sauna types. Confirm private-room details with the facility before setting out, particularly if accessibility is important.
Haraigawa is for the water, not convenience. It is a simple sulfur cold-mineral spring, with the tourism association describing source-flow water at the tubs and taps. The ordinary bath is ¥450. It is about a 50-minute drive from Tsushima-Takata interchange, and the route is remote. Uwajima City’s latest page lists Thursdays and December 31–January 1 as regular closures; the tourism association’s listing still includes the 1st and 20th of each month. Call before travelling, especially on those dates.
In Seiyo, choose Utopia Uwa for a straightforward spring bath with a sauna and Asagiri Lake outside the window. The natural cold spring is heated with a wood-pellet boiler. It is not a walk from Unomachi Station: the prefectural tourism site gives roughly 15 minutes by car. Hosenbo suits a longer stop because its separate balneotherapy pool adds a 20-metre pool, jet areas, a walking section and a seasonal outdoor jacuzzi.
| Seiyo bath | Admission | What the ticket covers | Access / water note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utopia Uwa | ¥600 | Spring bath and dry sauna | About 15 minutes by car from Unomachi Station; natural cold spring heated with a wood-pellet boiler |
| Quarterme Hosenbo | ¥700 bath only; ¥1,600 balneotherapy-pool plan | Pool plan includes the 20-metre pool, jet areas, walking section and seasonal outdoor jacuzzi | Cold mineral spring heated for bathing; pool is a separate product |
For the lake-facing bath, Kanogawa-so publishes a spring analysis, but its bathing page and the prefectural directory list different adult prices. Confirm the current admission with the facility.
| Kanogawa-so detail | Published information |
|---|---|
| Source temperature | 20.7°C |
| Temperature at point of use | 42°C |
| pH | 10 |
| Adult admission | ¥600 on the bathing page; ¥650 in the prefectural listing |
| Water used | Spring water in the main bath; tap water in the waterfall and mugwort baths |
Ainan: three quite different stops
Yamaidashi Ikoi no Sato is the strongest pick if spring flow is your priority. The town describes its public baths as source-flow, and its family bath includes a small Japanese-style rest room. Ainan Town’s adult-admission listing also differs from the operator and prefectural tourism pages; confirm the current fees with the facility before travelling.
Akebono-so has the broadest conventional public-bath mix in Ainan: baths with different functions, cold bath and separate men’s and women’s saunas. Family baths are available for ¥2,050 per hour, and Ehime’s tourism listing places a bus stop about a three-minute walk away. The town page lists a full-site closure from September 7–11, 2026 for boiler work; those dates have passed, but the page does not separately confirm reopening. Call before making it the reason for a long drive.
Yurari Uchiumi is the one to pick when you want a coastal soak, not a mineral spring. It pumps seawater from the Uwa Sea for its salt bath; both sides also have a sauna. Admission is ¥650, and the on-site restaurant makes it easier to turn the stop into a meal break. It closes Wednesdays and January 1, with occasional maintenance closures.
Family baths and car-free routes
| Facility | Family-bath rate and duration | Practical detail |
|---|---|---|
| Tsushima Atsuta | ¥4,000 for 90 minutes | Three rooms; prefectural listing describes all three as source-flow. One is wheelchair-accessible. |
| Haraigawa | ¥1,200–¥1,350 for 50 minutes | Remote; closure information differs by source, so call first. |
| Yamaidashi | ¥1,800–¥1,850 for 50 minutes | Listings disagree on the fee. |
| Akebono-so | ¥2,050 per hour | Confirm reopening: the town's September 7–11, 2026 boiler-closure notice has passed but does not separately state that it has reopened. |
For public transport, Poppo Onsen at JR Matsumaru is by far the simplest. Utopia Uwa and Hosenbo need a local bus or taxi from the rail station, and late bath hours do not guarantee a late return bus. Tsushima Atsuta can be reached by bus from Uwajima, but check both directions. Haraigawa’s community bus has limited weekday service; it is not a good last-minute detour.
At Tsushima Atsuta, one of the three family rooms is specifically described as wheelchair-accessible. Confirm admission, party-size limits and the room’s actual access route when booking. Haraigawa offers a lower-cost private bath, while Yamaidashi’s room comes with a six-tatami sitting space; they solve different family needs.
Keep the route regional
If you have a car, avoid planning a single “nine onsen” circuit. Pair Ozu with Kanogawa-so, keep Utopia Uwa and Hosenbo in the Seiyo part of the itinerary, and treat Tsushima/Haraigawa as a separate Uwajima-area outing. The three Ainan facilities are their own coastal or mountain cluster.
Without a car, Poppo Onsen is the simplest by far. Utopia Uwa and Hosenbo require a bus or taxi connection from the nearest rail station, and a long bathing-hours window does not guarantee a useful evening return bus. Check the date-specific public-transport timetable before choosing either. Haraigawa is the least suitable for a last-minute public-transport detour.
Tattoo rules are not consistently stated across the facilities’ current visitor pages. Ask the specific bath before travelling if that affects your choice.
