Nihon Ryokan Utsuwa in Kannawa: choosing between the main building and Yuian
Every Utsuwa room has a free-flowing indoor spring bath. Main-building guests get two large private outdoor baths; Yuian rooms add an outdoor rock bath.
Every room at Nihon Ryokan Utsuwa has a private indoor bath fed by a free-flowing hot spring. The choice is whether to stay in the main building, where guests also get access to two unusually large private outdoor baths and a rooftop footbath, or in Yuian, the separate annex with a private indoor bath and open-air rock bath in every room. Yuian is quieter and more self-contained; the main building comes with more shared bathing options.
There is one important catch: Yuian guests cannot use the main building's large private baths, rooftop footbath, yukata service or free draft beer. Yuian is not simply the main building with an extra outdoor tub attached.
What the two room groups include
The main building has eight rooms, including the 100.12-square-metre special room Shinki. All have a private indoor hot spring bath. Room size, view and layout vary; some look towards Mount Tsurumi or the Kannawa steam, while others face Beppu Bay and Takasakiyama. The more affordable Rei-ki room is near the front desk and does not have a notable view, so it can make sense if you mainly want an in-room bath and access to the main-building facilities.
Yuian has seven detached rooms: Waki, Tatsu-ki, Cha-ki, Sei-ki, Sen-ki, Ri-ki and Yoki. Most are about 38.68 square metres, with Sei-ki smaller at 30.40 square metres; each is designed for two guests. All have both an indoor bath and an open-air rock bath. That is the clearest choice if you want to move between two private baths without leaving your room.
The annex sits on a separate site. Check-in is at the main building's first-floor front desk, about 100 metres up the road. One representative can check in while the rest of the group and luggage stay put; the walk matters in rain or if someone in your party has mobility needs.
The main building's baths are shared by reservation-free turns
Main-building guests can use two private outdoor baths: Kiseki (about 45 square metres) and Kogane (about 40 square metres). Neither is booked in advance. Guests use them when free and wait if another group is bathing. That gives you flexibility, but not a guaranteed slot at a popular time.
The spring in the guest-room baths comes from a different source than the one used in the large outdoor baths. The water is a sodium-chloride spring with a pH of 3.3, and both bath types are free-flowing. A separate current analysis sheet for each source is not available, so those figures should not be assigned to every tub individually.
The rooftop footbath is another main-building perk, with views over Beppu Bay, Takasakiyama and the city. It is available to main-building guests around the clock. Guests in Shinki also have their own rooftop open-air bath, Ruri.
Meals are up to you
Utsuwa is a room-only property: there is no breakfast or dinner service. Guests can eat nearby, bring food back or order delivery. Each room has a microwave and basic tableware, but not a kitchen; cooking appliances and in-room grilling are not allowed.
That setup works well if you already want to try Kannawa's restaurants or jigoku-mushi. It is less convenient if a ryokan dinner and breakfast are part of what you want from the stay. For a two-meal property, compare the options in the Beppu ryokan guide.
Getting there and practical details
The inn is in Kannawa Higashi, about a five-minute walk from Jigokubaru bus stop. There is no fixed station shuttle; check current local bus timetables instead. By car, tell the property in advance if you need a parking space; availability is limited.
Utsuwa has private baths, and guests with tattoos should call the inn to check its entry rules before the cancellation deadline. Pets are not accepted, including animals left in a vehicle. The main building has an elevator; ask about the route from your room to the bath if you need step-free access.
For families, the main building is generally easier to compare because most rooms have higher occupancy than Yuian's two-person rooms. The inn publishes different child charges by age and bedding, but the applicable amount depends on the current plan; enter each child's age in the booking form and check the total.
Compare the main building and Yuian for the same dates, room and cancellation terms.
