Where to eat dinner in Kannawa: Jigoku-mushi, ryokan meals and late arrivals

Jigoku-mushi Workshop takes last orders at 6 p.m. and accepts no reservations, so late arrivals should arrange dinner with their ryokan before travelling.

Jigoku-mushi is easy to fit into a Kannawa stay if you treat it as a daytime meal. At the Jigoku-mushi Workshop, you choose ingredients and steam them over hot-spring vapour yourself. The last orders are taken at 6 pm, and there are no reservations, so it is a poor bet for anyone arriving late or trying to make a fixed ryokan dinner.

The other option is to let your lodging handle dinner. That means a set meal or buffet at the property, served at its own hours. If you would rather eat out, choose the restaurant before heading to the baths; small Kannawa places have their own closing days and last orders.

The workshop works best before check-in

The Jigoku-mushi Workshop Kannawa is open from 10 am to 7 pm, with last orders at 6 pm. The basic pot fee covers up to 15 minutes.

Pot sizeFee
Small¥400
Large¥600

Ingredients are separate, and the workshop does not take reservations. Leave time for choosing food, waiting for a pot and eating; the 15-minute fee is not the length of the whole visit.

That makes lunch or an early-afternoon stop the safer plan. If you arrive in Kannawa after 3 pm, check the queue before committing. A wait can quickly collide with dinner at your ryokan, and abandoning the workshop is better than rushing through both.

Staying in for dinner

At Ryokan Kunisakisou, dinner plans include a kaiseki meal with jigoku-mushi dishes. Choose a plan that explicitly includes dinner and ask the inn about the latest seating time if your arrival is tight. The meal is prepared by the ryokan; it is not the same experience as selecting ingredients and operating a pot at the workshop.

Nihon Ryokan Utsuwa takes the opposite approach. It does not serve breakfast or dinner, and guests can eat out, bring food back or arrange delivery. Rooms have a microwave but no kitchen, so this is a flexible lodging choice, not a self-catering apartment.

Akari no Yado Togetsu has a buffet dinner with local and Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes. Its usual dinner service is 6–8 pm, with last entry to the buffet at 7:30 pm. On busy dates, seating may be split into an earlier or later sitting; the property assigns the time at check-in rather than letting guests choose in advance. If you plan to use its station shuttle, book it by the previous day and make sure the ride, check-in and dinner slot work together.

If you want to eat out

Two Kannawa options are Restaurant Mitsuboshi and Japanese Restaurant Iyasaka. Mitsuboshi serves dinner from 5 pm, with last orders at 6:30 pm, and closes on Mondays and Tuesdays. It does not accept children aged 10 or younger, so families need another plan. Iyasaka serves Japanese dishes, including seasonal food and jigoku-mushi, and closes on Thursdays. Its current hours page gives no dinner last-order time, so call before relying on a late seating.

These details can change, and a listed opening time does not guarantee a table. Check the restaurant's own notice on the day, especially if dinner is the reason for choosing a particular lodging plan.

Let your arrival time decide

If you reach Kannawa around lunchtime, the workshop can be the main event; keep dinner separate. An arrival around 3 pm is better suited to checking in, bathing and eating at the inn or a restaurant you have already confirmed. After 6 pm, the workshop is no longer an option. Ask a ryokan whether it can still serve your included meal, or arrange takeaway or delivery before you arrive.

Beppu City's visitor information puts the bus ride from Beppu Station to Kannawa at about 25 minutes, followed by roughly a four-minute walk to the workshop. Evening services depend on the date and route. Check the stop nearest your lodging rather than assuming the return trip will be as easy as the daytime ride.

Staying in Kannawa keeps dinner and bathing in the same neighbourhood, but individual properties sit at different distances from the main streets. Togetsu, for example, is near the Beppu Rehabilitation Centre stop rather than beside Beppu Station. Confirm the actual pickup point and final shuttle time with your hotel; “station shuttle” does not mean an on-demand airport transfer.

For groups with different appetites or dietary needs, the meal format matters as much as the menu. A buffet lets each person choose, though service still ends at a set time. Kaiseki is more structured, so tell the inn about allergies before booking and wait for confirmation. Takeaway gives you the most control over timing, but Utsuwa's rooms are not equipped for cooking.
