Awara Onsen in Winter: What to Budget for Echizen Crab Dinner
Compare Awara ryokan crab plans with eating out in Mikuni. Check whether a meal includes tagged Echizen crab, multiple crab dishes or taxi transport.
In Awara Onsen, the biggest dinner decision is whether to book a crab plan at your ryokan or leave the hot-spring town for a restaurant. Mikuni Port’s seafood restaurants are not within walking distance of the onsen district, but the Awara tourism association offers a stay-and-dinner arrangement with optional round-trip taxi service. That can make an outside meal workable without renting a car.
Echizen crab season runs from 6 November to 20 March; female seiko crab is available only through 31 December. A menu that says “crab” does not necessarily mean Echizen crab. Look for a plan that names Fukui-caught, yellow-tagged Echizen crab, then check the portion, serving dates and preparation. Some hotel crab dishes use other local catch or imported frozen snow crab.
Choose the dinner arrangement before the hotel
| Dinner plan | Best fit | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Ryokan stay with a crab kaiseki plan | You want a named crab species and do not want to travel after check-in | Species and origin, serving dates, portion per guest, and the latest dinner start time |
| Stay in the onsen district and eat nearby | You want a local restaurant and do not need dinner at the inn | Opening days, last order, your own table reservation, and the walk back |
| Stay in Awara and dine around Mikuni Port | The seafood meal is the focus and your group does not want to drive | Whether both taxi legs are arranged, the meal time, and who to contact if delayed |
For 2026–27, some hotel plans run through 31 March 2027, later than the Echizen crab fishing season ends on 20 March. Do not infer the crab’s origin from the plan name alone for dates after the season. Ask the hotel what species and sourcing apply to your exact stay.
Three ryokan, three different crab dinners
Seifuso: choose how the tagged crab is served
Seifuso offers a winter Echizen crab kaiseki with one whole tagged crab. Choose boiled crab, or grilled shell with sashimi-style legs. This is a different dinner from the inn’s regular kaiseki or buffet: if the yellow-tagged crab is the reason you are booking, select a plan that explicitly includes it rather than assuming every buffet crab dish is Echizen crab.
The JR Awaraonsen Station shuttle is reservation-only, with pick-ups listed at 2:30, 3, 4 and 5 p.m. A departure with no reservations will not run; contact the inn at least an hour ahead to book or change a ride. Its listed return shuttles leave the inn at 9, 10 and 11 a.m.
Haiya: distinguish the Echizen plan from its full crab course
Haiya lists a tagged Echizen crab kaiseki with a whole crab, served boiled or as grilled shell and sashimi-style legs. Its separate full-course plan includes crab sashimi, grilled crab, hot pot, boiled crab and rice porridge, but uses frozen crab that the inn says is not Echizen crab. Compare the named plan and menu rather than treating the two as interchangeable.
Haiya provides a complimentary pick-up from JR Awaraonsen Station between 2 and 6 p.m.; arrange it with the inn in advance. The access page does not list a morning drop-off service, so confirm how you will reach the station if you have an early train.
Grandia Housen: buffet dining or a dated Echizen crab plan
Grandia Housen offers buffet and kaiseki dining, as well as a specific Echizen crab plan listed for 7 November 2026–31 March 2027. That plan excludes 29 December 2026–5 January 2027. The hotel’s crab page separately identifies nearby-caught crab for sashimi and grilled dishes, and imported frozen snow crab; neither should be assumed to be Echizen crab. Check the menu attached to your room plan, and ask whether guests at the same table can choose different meal types.
Eating out: keep the ride and return time in the plan
The Awara tourism association’s “stay and eat out” arrangement lets you choose accommodation and dinner together, with a round-trip taxi as an option for participating restaurants. It is an advance booking arrangement, not a service for calling a car after check-in. The ¥2,200 local restaurant ticket is a meal credit per person; you must reserve your own table, and that ticket cannot be combined with the taxi option.
For participating restaurants around Mikuni, the listed taxi charge is ¥3,300 for up to four people or ¥6,600 for five to eight. Restaurants have individual closing days, so confirm that the restaurant is open on your date before submitting the arrangement. The association says payment is due within three days after booking confirmation, and cancellation fees apply from 21 days before the stay.
If you only want a regular dinner, staying near Awara-Yunomachi Station keeps the return walk simple and leaves time for the bath. For a seafood dinner in Mikuni, book the outbound and return rides with the meal. Do not squeeze the restaurant’s last order, a final shuttle or taxi and a public-bath closing time together without a delay buffer—winter weather can slow road travel.
A two-person dinner budget, excluding accommodation
These examples use currently listed prices for dinner, taxi and public bathing. Drinks, extras and the room are not included. Echizen crab plans are priced separately and vary with the crab, serving style and date.
| Option for two | Listed meal, local transport and bath costs | Not included |
|---|---|---|
| Local restaurant ticket plus Sentopia Awara admission | ¥4,400 in meal credits + ¥1,200 for two adults = ¥5,600 | Drinks and any bill above the credits; taxi cannot be added to this ticket |
| Hamazaka’s sweet-shrimp set in Mikuni, round-trip taxi and Sentopia admission | ¥8,000 for two + ¥3,300 taxi (up to four people) + ¥1,200 for two adults = ¥12,500 | Drinks and extras; confirm restaurant and car availability through the arrangement |
| Echizen crab kaiseki at a ryokan | Depends on the chosen room-and-meal plan | Drinks, bathing tax and add-on dishes; verify crab species, portion and serving dates |
Sentopia Awara is a public bath near Awara-Yunomachi Station. Adult admission is ¥600 per person; it is open 10 a.m.–11 p.m., with last admission at 10:30 p.m. It closes on the third Tuesday of each month; if that Tuesday is a public holiday, it closes the next weekday. If you are returning from Mikuni, check whether you will arrive in time rather than assuming the bath fits after dinner.
Which dinner plan fits the trip?
Choose a named Echizen crab kaiseki when local crab is the point of the meal; check the species, serving size and dates before paying. Haiya’s published full-course and whole-crab plans use frozen crab, so they are not a substitute for an Echizen-crab plan. For a lower-cost evening out, the tourism association’s restaurant-and-taxi example totals ¥12,500 for two before drinks and extras; it is a comparison for local dining, not a crab-course quote.
