Is Matsuya Sensen Worth an Overnight Stay in Awara Onsen?
See how Matsuya Sensen’s mixed-source baths, day-use hours and room-to-bath walks affect the value of an overnight stay in Awara.
Matsuya Sensen makes the most sense when you have time to use its baths more than once. The men’s and women’s sides have different facilities, and the bath line-up can change with the rotation, so the headline list is not a promise that every guest can use every pool. Stay overnight and you can take your time; squeeze in a quick day visit and the range matters less.
What the baths are like
The official spa page lists a large public bath, open-air baths, a reclining bath and pot baths, with some differences between the men’s and women’s facilities. Matsuya Sensen draws from mixed hot-spring sources No. 14, 43 and 64. The listed spring quality is sodium-calcium chloride; source water is 29.3°C at pH 7.9, and the bathing facilities use a circulation system. Those are source and operating details, not a statement about the temperature of each tub.
The line-up is not identical on both sides. The men’s bath lists the public bath, open-air bath, reclining bath and pot baths. The women’s side also lists an urn bath, massage bath and healing sauna. Gender rotation determines which side is open to each guest, so check the current schedule instead of adding both lists together.
The choice is useful if you enjoy switching between bathing styles. It can be less compelling if you only want one straightforward soak, or if walking between your room and the large public bath is difficult. If that applies to someone in your party, ask about room location and the current bath rotation before booking.
How Matsuya Sensen scores
The seven editorial scores are a reference, not survey results:
| Comfort | Variety | Upkeep | Setting | Quiet | Access | Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 90 | 96 | 85 | 84 | 76 | 80 | 83 |
Variety is the standout, but the score does not mean every bath is open to each guest at once. Check the rotation, room distance and the hours you will actually be there.
Day use or a night at the ryokan?
From 1 July 2026, Matsuya Sensen lists these day-use terms:
| Detail | Current listing |
|---|---|
| Adult admission | ¥1,500 |
| Child admission, elementary-school age and younger | ¥800 |
| Typical window listed by tourism association | 4–7 p.m. |
| Two adults, admission only | ¥3,000 |
Availability can change with the day’s operations. The inn temporarily suspended day use earlier in 2026; check its notice or call before making a special trip.
An overnight stay buys time to split bathing between the afternoon, after dinner and the following morning. That is where the range of baths starts to matter. If you only plan one short soak, Sentopia Awara’s public bath is usually simpler to budget for. Compare the room and meal plan against the whole trip, not just the bath admission.

A relaxed one-night plan
After arriving, settle in and try the indoor bath before dinner. Leave the open-air or reclining bath for another visit rather than racing through the facilities in one go. The bath rotation and dinner-time crowds affect what is available and how busy it feels, so check the notice board when you arrive. A short second soak later in the evening—or a quiet visit in the morning—gives you room to choose based on how you feel.
Awara-Yunomachi Station is the more useful rail stop for the hot-spring district; JR Awaraonsen Station is a separate transport hub. If you are coming from the Shinkansen, allow time for the connecting bus or arrange the ryokan’s pick-up in advance. In winter, staying in means you do not have to head back out after dinner. For a next-day trip to Tojinbo, an early bath and checkout are easier to fit around onward transport than another evening excursion.
Before you book
Confirm the day’s bath rotation, opening times, dinner schedule and pick-up arrangements. In a large property, the walk from some rooms to the public bath can be longer; ask about room location if anyone in your party moves slowly or prefers a quieter area.
If you are arriving from Eiheiji or Tojinbo, do the longer sightseeing leg before check-in and leave the evening for the inn. An overnight stay makes sense when you expect to use the baths more than once; for a single quick soak, Sentopia’s longer public-bath window is easier to fit into the day.
