Yujuku Kanetaya Day Bath: A Clear-Source Hot Spring with a Short Window

Check Kanetaya’s ¥660 day-bath ticket, 6 p.m. last reception, gender-switched indoor baths, source-water details and bus access in Yujuku Onsen.

Kanetaya suits visitors who value the spring and a quiet indoor bath more than a long facility list. Its operator says the Kubo-yu source is used without adding water, heating, filtration or disinfectant. The operator lists day use from 3–7 p.m. with reception until 6 p.m.; Minakami’s tourism association gives the more conservative 3–6 p.m. window and notes additional unscheduled closures. Plan to arrive before 6 and check directly if you are making a special trip.

The tourism association also says children of elementary-school age and younger cannot bathe. The inn’s page does not list a child rate, so do not assume that old third-party prices or family policies still apply. Tattoo rules are not stated clearly on the current pages; ask the inn before visiting if that affects your plans.

One day visitor does not get both baths

Kanetaya has two indoor baths, Hiro-su-no-yu and Monju-no-yu. Their fittings differ: one has a curved granite bath, while the other has a cypress ceiling and a garden-facing window. The inn alternates the bathing sides by time:

  • From 3–10 p.m., Hiro-su-no-yu is for men and Monju-no-yu for women.
  • From 10 p.m.–10 a.m., the sides switch.

Because ordinary day use begins at 3 p.m., visitors will generally use the first arrangement. The ¥660 ticket is not a pass to move between both baths. The alternating schedule matters if you are choosing Kanetaya for a particular view or travelling as a couple and expecting to bathe together.

The inn’s 24-hour bath information applies to its overnight guests, not to the day-use window. Check-in or guest access does not extend the day visitor’s last reception time.

The spring data, in the operator’s own terms

Kanetaya uses Kubo-yu, a sodium-calcium sulfate spring. Its detailed source sheet lists a source temperature of 59.1°C, a facility-use temperature of 41°C and pH 8.0. The inn says it adjusts the flow to reach a suitable bathing temperature without adding water or heating the spring. Its current bathing report also says there is no circulation filtration, bath additive or disinfection treatment.

Those are the operator’s stated spring and treatment conditions, not a claim that every hot spring in Yujuku works the same way. The source temperature and bath-use temperature are separate measurements; 59.1°C is not the temperature of the tub.

Reaching the inn without a car

Kanetaya’s access page gives a straightforward public-transport route: take the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Jomo-Kogen, then a Kanetsu bus to Yujuku Onsen. The inn lists about 75 minutes by train and 20 minutes by bus, but the departure times must line up. From Gokan Station, the operator lists a roughly 30-minute bus ride. By car, it gives about 15 minutes from Tsukiyono interchange via Route 17.

The bath does not open to day visitors until 3 p.m., so check that the bus you plan to use gets you there with time to spare. Use the operator’s current access page and the bus company timetable for your date; a route duration is not a promise that a connecting service will be waiting.

Who should choose Kanetaya

Kanetaya is a sensible stop if you are already in Minakami, want a low-cost soak at a small inn and care about the source-water details. It is not a substitute for a large day spa: the public listing does not offer a sauna, outdoor bath, restaurant or long-stay lounge. Visitors travelling with elementary-school-age children should choose another facility, and anyone arriving near 6 p.m. should call before setting out.
