Tanokura or Hoteiya? Choosing between an In-Room Onsen and a Private-Use Bath

At Hoteiya, the room matters: most detached rooms have their own bath, but two main-building rooms do not. Those guests can use Hoteiya’s two free private-use baths instead, provided one is vacant.
Tanokura has 11 rooms, all with an in-room hot-spring bath. Five add a private open-air bath, so the upgrade is about bathing outdoors rather than getting access to hot water at all. Its location is another strong point: Lake Kinrin is about a one-minute walk away.
Hoteiya has a broader spread of room types. Most detached rooms include a private guest-room bath, while Lavender and Kokonoe in the main building list no bath in the room. Guests can still use Hote no Yu or Yufudake no Yu: both are free, private-use baths for 40 minutes at a time. They are used when vacant, not held for a pre-booked slot, and operate 3–11 pm and 6–9 am. The indoor bath is the more weatherproof option; the other is outdoors.
The useful question is how fixed your bathing schedule is
If you want to return to your room and bathe whenever you like, Tanokura is the safer fit even when you do not book one of its five open-air rooms. If you are comfortable timing a soak around availability, Hoteiya may let you book a lower room category and still bathe privately with your companion.
The public baths offer a different reason to choose. Tanokura has two spring-fed public baths, both with outdoor sections; the men’s and women’s baths switch in the morning. Hoteiya’s shared outdoor bath sits alongside its two private-use baths. Hoteiya is about an eight-minute walk from Lake Kinrin, so both inns are within walking range, though Tanokura makes an early lake visit especially easy.
Hoteiya can usually pick guests up from Yufuin Station or the bus center after they call on arrival; confirm the current process before you travel.
