Yudanaka and Shibu Onsen: Can You Visit for the Day, or Should You Stay?

The deciding factor is access. Yudanaka has straightforward day-use options by the station; Shibu’s full nine-bath circuit is for guests staying at a Shibu inn. A day visitor can pay to use Shibu’s Oyu, but that does not open the other eight baths.

For a short stop: Kaede-no-Yu

Kaede-no-Yu sits beside Yudanaka Station, so it is the least complicated option between trains. Its station-side footbath is separate from the indoor and outdoor baths.

Allow time to change and get back to the platform; the stated closing time is not the same as last admission. Check for holiday or maintenance notices on the day.

For a half-day: Yudanaka’s bath-hopping ticket

The Yamanouchi Tourism Bureau currently lists a 2026 ticket covering Yudanaka Oyu, Wata-no-Yu and Kaede-no-Yu. It is sold at the Yamanouchi Information Center beside Yudanaka Station.

This is a better fit when you want to compare several baths and can give the area most of a day. If you only have time for one soak, Kaede-no-Yu is easier to plan around.

Shibu Oyu is open to day visitors; the nine-bath tour is not

Non-guests can use Shibu Oyu, bath number nine, for ¥800 per adult or ¥500 per child. Its listed day-use hours are 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with occasional temporary closures. Buy an admission ticket at the Shibu Onsen information office or a participating inn, then show it at a listed unlocking location. These businesses may not be staffed at every hour, so leave time for the extra step.

The other eight public baths are for guests staying at a Shibu inn. The inn lends the bath key; use is free from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., except during cleaning or other temporary closures. The baths are simple and can be very hot. Shibu Oyu does not provide shampoo or body wash, and washing hair there is prohibited.

When an overnight stay earns its place

Stay in Shibu if you want the full public-bath circuit, an evening walk through the stone-paved town, or a morning soak before leaving. The key benefit is time: you can spread the baths across several visits instead of fitting one stop around the day-use window.

Stay near Yudanaka Station when your priority is a low-friction train connection or one accessible bath before continuing elsewhere. If you are combining the area with the Snow Monkey Park, decide what to do with luggage before choosing the bath: the Yamanouchi Information Center beside the station lists storage at ¥500 per item. Drivers should use Shibu’s designated parking; its published terms list 30 minutes free, then ¥300 per hour up to ¥1,000 per 24 hours. Check the live access page before setting out, as these arrangements can change.

Water-temperature figures need the same care. The tourism bureau’s multilingual Kaede-no-Yu record gives a source temperature of about 91.7°C and bath water around 42–43°C. That does not describe Yudanaka Oyu or Wata-no-Yu, whose individual figures are not published on the 2026 ticket page. Shibu’s own baths use very hot source water; take a short soak, rest and drink water rather than trying to complete all nine for the sake of the key.

The Shibu association announced a one-off Oyu cleaning closure from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 9, 2026. That date is now past; the takeaway for future visits is to check the latest notice, since temporary closures can affect day visitors and overnight guests. The association does not state one uniform tattoo rule for every bath in the material reviewed here, so confirm with the specific inn or facility if this matters to you.
