Yudanaka and Shibu Onsen Day Trip: A Simple Route from the Station

If you have only a couple of hours, stay around Yudanaka Station and use Kaede-no-Yu. With most of a day, the 2026 Yudanaka ticket lets you visit three baths in the Yudanaka district. Shibu Oyu is a separate day-use option across town; the other eight Shibu baths are reserved for guests staying at a local inn.

Two hours near Yudanaka Station

Leave your larger bags at a confirmed luggage-storage point, then head to Kaede-no-Yu beside Yudanaka Station.

The bath is an easy fit before a train or after arriving in town. Keep the rest of this short stop nearby: changing, drying off and collecting your bags take time, and a trip to Shibu would add another leg. The footbath outside has different hours from the indoor facility.

Half a day: use the Yudanaka bath-hopping ticket

The 2026 Yudanaka Onsen ticket covers Yudanaka Oyu, Wata-no-Yu and Kaede-no-Yu. The tourism bureau sells it at the Yamanouchi Information Center beside the station.

Start early enough to pick up the ticket and allow for the baths’ separate schedules. Access can be suspended on bath-cleaning days, and the number of keys available for the two neighbourhood baths is limited. Check availability on the day rather than building a tight itinerary around all three.

If you only have time for one bath, the ticket may not be worth the extra stop. Kaede-no-Yu is easier to fit around a train, while the ticket makes more sense when visiting several baths is the point of the outing.

The ticket page lists Yudanaka Oyu and Wata-no-Yu for 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Kaede-no-Yu entry until 8:30 p.m. It does not publish individual source temperatures, pH or fixed tub temperatures for Oyu and Wata-no-Yu. Do not assign them figures published for another inn simply because it draws from the same hot-spring area. Kaede-no-Yu’s multilingual tourism record distinguishes its roughly 91.7°C source from a bathing temperature around 42–43°C; source temperature is not the temperature you enter.

Shibu Oyu for a different kind of stop

Shibu Oyu is open to day visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is ¥800 for adults and ¥500 for children. There is an extra step: buy a ticket at the Shibu Onsen information office or one of the listed inns, then show it at a participating business so staff can unlock the bath. Those businesses may not be staffed at every hour, so do not leave the ticket and unlocking process until the end of the afternoon.

The nine-bath circuit is for guests staying at a Shibu inn. A day-use ticket for Oyu does not grant access to the other eight baths. Oyu also has no shampoo or body wash, and washing your hair there is not allowed.

The Shibu Onsen association announced a cleaning closure at Oyu from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 9, 2026. That one-off date has passed; check current notices for a new closure.

If the Snow Monkey Park is part of the day, leave luggage at a confirmed storage point before heading out. The Yamanouchi Information Center lists storage at ¥500 per item. Drivers should use Shibu’s designated parking and check its latest notice; the source’s posted terms give the first 30 minutes free, then ¥300 per hour, capped at ¥1,000 per 24 hours.

Which plan fits your day?

Choose Kaede-no-Yu for a short, low-transfer visit. Pick up the Yudanaka ticket if you have time to stay in that district for several hours. Go to Shibu Oyu only if that particular bath is your priority and you can accommodate its ticket-and-key procedure. If you want all nine Shibu baths, plan an overnight stay instead.

For every option, work backward from your return train or bus. Leave time to change, retrieve luggage and walk back to the station; in winter, allow extra time for slippery streets. Check current transport and facility notices before you leave, since temporary cleaning or closures can change the plan.
