Toretore-no-Yu or Chosei-no-Yu? Two Day Baths in Shirahama

Compare Shirahama’s Toretore-no-Yu and Chosei-no-Yu for admission, spring-water details, sauna, towels, access and visit length.

Toretore-no-Yu and Chosei-no-Yu are only ¥80 apart for adult admission, but the ticket buys a different kind of visit. Toretore is a large bathing complex with a hinoki sauna, many baths, dining and an optional bedrock-spa area. Chosei-no-Yu is smaller and puts more of the focus on its two hot-spring sources and flow-through bathing. Choose by how you want to spend the time, not by the small difference in entry price.

As listed in September 2026, Toretore-no-Yu costs ¥980 and is open 9 a.m.–11 p.m., with last entry at 10:30 p.m. Chosei-no-Yu costs ¥900 and is open 10 a.m.–10 p.m.; it closes Wednesdays, moving the closure to Thursday when Wednesday is a public holiday. Check each operator’s notice before travelling, as maintenance or seasonal changes may affect the schedule.

Toretore-no-Yu: more to do under one roof

Toretore is the better match if you want the bath to fill a few hours. Its outdoor area has a source-water rock bath, a Kishu-binchotan bath, individual ceramic tubs, a reclining bath and a shallow pool for children. Indoors, the facility lists oxygen, jet and electric baths alongside its hinoki sauna.

Towels are not included by default. Children below elementary-school age cannot use the bedrock-spa area.

The operator’s current policy refuses entry to guests with tattoos, including fake tattoos. Do not assume that a cover-up sticker will be accepted; the published rules do not list an exception.

Toretore is beside the Toretore Market complex. From JR Shirahama Station, the trip by car is about five minutes, and the Toretore Market-mae bus stop is immediately nearby. If the market is already on your itinerary, it is easy to pair the two without crossing town twice. The on-site restaurant and rest areas also make a longer visit more practical than at a small bathhouse.

Chosei-no-Yu: fewer baths, clearer spring details

Chosei-no-Yu’s distinction is its water rather than a long facility list. It draws from Chosei and Higashitani sources. Its published information gives source temperatures of 78.9°C and 61.7°C; those are temperatures at the sources, not the temperature of the bathing pools. The operator says it switches the main source by season to keep the baths flowing at a usable temperature.

The prefectural hot-spring association lists the baths as flow-through, with no reheating and daily water replacement. It notes that water may be added in summer when the source is too hot. That is a more specific description of the supply method than Toretore publishes for its full range of pools. Toretore identifies its Shirahama Onsen rock bath as using the Fujinoyu source, but does not say that every bath uses that source or is flow-through.

There are three main bath types: an indoor bath, an outdoor bath and a charcoal bath. There is no sauna or bedrock-spa product listed on the current bathing pages. That is a limitation if you want to move between heat rooms and multiple pools; it is the point if you mainly want to soak in a smaller, source-focused bath.

Chosei-no-Yu sits in Kogaura. Take a bus from Shirahama Station towards Sandanbeki to Kogaura, then walk about a minute; a taxi takes around five minutes. The complex also lists Menkichi ramen at the same address, but it is a separate noodle shop rather than a large in-house food court.

How long do you have?

If you have only about an hour, neither is an ideal detour from Shirarahama Beach: travel, changing and washing leave little time for the bath. Use a nearby public bath instead. The Shirahama public-bath guide covers the smaller options around the hot-spring district.

With 90 minutes or two hours, Chosei-no-Yu is easier to enjoy as a focused visit. If you have two to four hours, Toretore can fill the time with different baths, a sauna, the optional bedrock spa, food and a rest. It is also the natural choice if you are already going to Toretore Market.

So, which should you choose?

Pick Toretore-no-Yu for the sauna, range of baths, child-friendly shallow pool or an easy half-day beside the market. Budget extra if you want bedrock bathing or need towels, and check the tattoo rule before visiting.

Pick Chosei-no-Yu if you care more about the source and bathing method than facility size. The venue has fewer features, but its published spring information is unusually specific. If that distinction is what brought you to Shirahama, the ¥80 saving is incidental.

For a shorter soak in the historic Yunozaki and Shirarahama areas, the Shirahama public-bath guide is a better starting point. The guide to reading onsen source temperatures explains why a source at 78.9°C does not mean the bath is that hot.
