Where to Stay at Lake Toya: A Practical Guide to Toyako Onsen’s Different Areas
Choose a Lake Toya Onsen stay by bus access, fireworks, lakeside walks and next-day plans. Here is how the central, east and west areas differ.
Most hotels in Toyako Onsen sit along the same stretch of shore, but they do not all make the same trip easy. A room near the bus terminal suits a short stay by public transport; a central lakeside address keeps the evening walk simple; and the larger hotels farther east work best when you expect to spend most of your time on the property. Check the nearest bus stop as well as the lake view before booking.
Central Toyako: easiest for a first stay without a car
The area around Toyako Onsen Bus Terminal and the central lakeside is the simplest base for a one-night visit. Sapporo’s reserved intercity bus arrives in the hot-spring district, and local buses from JR Toya Station continue through stops in Sakuramachi, Chuo-dori, Motomachi and Higashimachi. The hotel’s nearest stop matters: “Toyako Onsen” is a district, not one stop shared by every property.
Central is also the least fussy place to stay if you want an evening lakeside stroll, the sightseeing boat pier or dinner outside your hotel. During the 2026 long-run fireworks season, the show is scheduled nightly from 20:45 to about 21:05 through 31 October. From the middle of town, you can walk down to the shore after dinner without arranging a ride. Wind can still cancel a show, so I would not pay extra for a room view unless the room itself is also worth the price.
Best fit: first-time visitors, short stays, no-car trips, flexible dinners and anyone who wants to watch the fireworks from the lakeside.
East Toyako: choose it for the hotel, not for frequent trips downtown
The larger resort properties extend east from the central area. This is a sensible choice when dinner, the public bath, a lounge and the lake view are all part of the stay; you can settle in and let the hotel shape the evening. It is less convenient if you plan to walk back and forth for restaurants, the boat pier or bus connections.
“Lake view” can mean different things from one room category to another. A hotel’s lakeside address does not guarantee a direct view from every room. Check the room description for its direction and floor, especially if seeing the lake or fireworks from your window is part of why you are booking.
Best fit: a two-meal plan, families or couples expecting to spend the evening on-site, and travellers who value the bath and room more than being in the middle of town.
West and Sakuramachi: handy for the next morning’s route
Sakuramachi and the western end of the hot-spring district can work well if your next stop is the Nishiyama Crater Promenade or you need to return to JR Toya Station. Local buses serve several stops along the district, so check the stop beside your hotel and the direction of your morning journey rather than judging the location from a map pin alone.
The trade-off is the evening. If you want to walk to the central lakeshore for dinner or fireworks, a western address adds a return walk or bus ride. That may be minor in good weather and more tiresome with luggage, ice or strong wind.
Best fit: an early train departure, a planned Nishiyama walk, or a car-based itinerary where the hotel’s exact distance from the centre matters less.
JR Toya Station is not the lakeside onsen town
JR Toya Station sits inland from the resort. The bus between the station and Toyako Onsen costs ¥400 one way for an adult (about HK$20 / NT$82) and takes around 26 minutes; taxis are another option. Staying by the station can make sense for a late arrival or a very early train, but it is a different base from the lake, bathhouses and hotel district.
If the trip is built around the lake, book in Toyako Onsen and save the station-side option for a connection-focused overnight. For the actual train and bus choices, see the Sapporo and New Chitose access guide. Still deciding whether to stay at all? The day trip vs. overnight comparison weighs that against the fireworks and return services.
