Matsumotoyu in Higashi-Nakano: Deep Cold Baths and Sunday Morning Hours
Matsumotoyu has a 150 cm men’s cold bath, a milder second pool and women’s dry and steam saunas. Sunday bathing is split; entry is ¥600, or ¥1,100 with sauna.
Matsumotoyu is a good fit when you want a proper city sento with more range than a single hot pool and sauna. Its signature is the deep cold bath on the men’s side, but the two-temperature set-up and women’s dry-and-steam sauna combination are just as useful for planning a first visit. The Sunday schedule is the other detail to remember: the bathhouse closes at noon and does not reopen until 3 p.m.
The deep pool is only one of two cold-water options
After the 2021 renovation, the men’s cold bath reaches about 150 cm deep; the women’s is about 135 cm. The facility lists a colder pool around 16°C and a milder one around 28°C. Take your time with the deep pool: use the handrail, check the bottom and enter gradually rather than jumping in.
The sauna set-up differs by side. Men have a larger dry sauna with automatic steam, while women have both a dry sauna and a steam room. Other pools include a medicinal bath, electric and jet baths, a reclining bath and a Bade Gastein mineral bath. The facility does not provide a spring analysis identifying a natural hot-spring source, so that mineral-bath name should not be read as proof of an onsen.

The closest station is Ochiai on the Tozai Line, about a three-minute walk. Higashi-Nakano and Shimo-Ochiai stations are each roughly eight minutes away. The bathhouse has two parking spaces, but check with the front desk before relying on them.
Crowds can vary by hour, especially around the sauna. Matsumotoyu links to a live waiting-time update from its homepage, so check that before crossing town specifically for the sauna. If you would rather swim outside than focus on the cold bath, Aqua Higashinakano is a short walk away and has a small outdoor pool.
