Asahi Onsen Asahiso: A Simple Bath, with Kagura on Autumn Saturdays

Plan a visit to Asahi Onsen Asahiso in Hamada, Shimane. Check ¥500 admission, Tuesday closure, limited bus access and the 2026 Saturday Iwami Kagura season.

Asahi Onsen is a small hot-spring area in Hamada, western Shimane. For a day visitor, the practical bath is Asahiso: a ¥500 public facility with one bathing area for each gender, rather than a spa with a long list of pools and saunas. It is an easy stop by car from the Asahi interchange. By bus, the connections take more planning than the opening hours suggest.

On autumn Saturdays, Asahiso also hosts Iwami Kagura in its rest hall. The 2026 event begins at 8 p.m., just as the bath closes, so the order matters: soak first, then head to the performance. The event is seasonal and its published date list should be checked before making a special trip.

What you get for the admission fee

Asahiso reopened after renovation in 2014. Its main draw is uncomplicated: a local hot spring in a timber building, with a calm, neighbourhood-bath feel. The tourism association describes the facility as a day-use bathhouse; it does not list the sauna circuit, outdoor views or variety of bathing pools people might expect from a large Japanese spa.

The spring is classified as an alkaline simple hot spring. Shimane’s tourism site lists a source temperature of 34.8°C and pH 8.8. Those figures describe the source, not the water temperature in the bath. The city’s facility documents include heating equipment, so do not assume the pool is filled at the source temperature or that every tub is untreated.

The official listings describe separate men’s and women’s bathing areas. They do not give a tattoo policy or detailed step-free bathing information. Hamada’s tourism listing notes barrier-free access and an accessible toilet, but anyone who needs specific assistance entering the bath should call ahead. The facility’s number is 0855-45-0321.

Getting there: straightforward by car, awkward by bus

From Hamada Expressway’s Asahi interchange, the drive is about two minutes. The tourism association lists roughly nine parking spaces, so a large group may want to check in advance.

Public transport is less predictable. Hamada City’s local buses connect Hamada Station and Iwami-Imaichi, while the Kida line serves the Asahi area. The linked Kida-line timetable is dated May 2024 and shows infrequent, day-specific departures. One bus to the Asahi Onsen stop runs on Tuesday, when Asahiso is normally closed.

Check whether a newer timetable or another connection is available for your date before relying on that stop. A taxi from a practical transfer point may be simpler.

If you are going by bus, check both the outbound and return legs before leaving Hamada. A ride that gets you there is not enough if the evening service does not line up with the bath or the performance. For an event night, travelling by car or staying nearby is the safer plan unless you have confirmed a ride back.

Pair the bath with Iwami Kagura—on the right date

The 2026 Yuttari Kagura series is scheduled at Asahiso’s rest hall from September 5 through November 7, generally on Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. Admission is ¥500; visitors up to junior-high age enter free, and advance registration is not required. The event listing says performances or programmes may change. Its date-by-date schedule includes an apparent weekday listing, so verify the exact performance date with the organiser before travelling for a particular show.

Asahiso’s final bath admission is 7:30 p.m. and the building closes at 8 p.m. You cannot watch the 8 p.m. performance first and then bathe. Arrive with enough time to change, soak and be ready for the show. The published event fee is separate from the bath’s admission unless the organiser confirms otherwise.

The 2026 event page lists the Hamada City Asahi Branch Industry and Construction Section for enquiries at 0855-45-1437. For the bath itself, call Asahiso at 0855-45-0321. Those are different contacts, so use the one that matches your question.

Is Asahiso worth adding to your Shimane itinerary?

It fits neatly into a western Shimane road trip, especially if you are already travelling near Hamada or the Asahi area. The low entry price and short drive from the expressway make it a practical pause; it is not, on the available facility information, a destination for a full afternoon of different baths.

If the Saturday Kagura performance is the reason you are going, build the visit around the event date and the return journey—not just the bath’s closing time. For another western Shimane option, see the Arifuku Onsen day-use guide or the Yunotsu Onsen day-use guide. They are separate destinations, not additional baths within Asahi Onsen.
