Minatogawayu: A Neighborhood Sento Beside Kobe’s Higashiyama Market
Visit Kobe’s Minatogawayu for a ¥500 supported-rate sento, steam sauna, upstairs outdoor bath, free toiletries and Higashiyama Market nearby.
Minatogawayu is a neighborhood sento in Kobe’s Higashiyama district, a handy stop if you are already exploring Hyogo Ward. It is a public bathhouse, not a documented natural onsen: the operator’s facility page lists its baths and amenities but does not identify a hot-spring source. The practical appeal is simpler—several bath types, a steam sauna, and a covered market a short walk away.

The facility has deep and shallow baths, jet and sitting baths, an electric bath, an outdoor herbal bath, a cold bath and a steam sauna. The outdoor bath, cold bath and steam sauna are upstairs on the second floor. The humid-heat steam room is not a high-temperature dry sauna. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a hair dryer, toner, lotion and hair ties are free; makeup remover is listed in the women’s bath and shaving cream in the men’s. Face-towel rental is ¥50.
That layout makes the time of day part of the visit: the upper bathing area gets natural light in the afternoon, while the neon frontage and standing counter give an evening visit a different feel. The steam room is around 50°C, so its humid heat is not comparable to a large high-temperature dry sauna.
Yutonamisha’s FAQ says tattoos are accepted at its baths, including Minatogawayu. That is this operator’s policy; it should not be taken as a general rule for Japanese bathhouses. If tattoo entry is important to your plans, check the operator’s current guidance before going.
Let the market set the pace
The covered Higashiyama Market is about 300 metres long and has more than 100 shops, according to its official site. It is a working shopping street for everyday groceries, prepared food, fish, meat, bread and sweets, rather than a souvenir arcade. The market is listed as a four-minute walk from Minatogawa-Koen Station. That makes it easy to browse before bathing, though the sources do not give a precise walking time between the station and Minatogawayu.
The standing counter serves craft beer from a brewery in nearby Shinkaichi and food sourced from Higashiyama Market; selection varies. It is suited to a short stop after bathing rather than a long lounge visit.
A 2026 interview with the managers describes how they introduced the bathhouse to younger visitors and later held an event for regular customers. The counter and market-sourced food keep the venue tied to its neighbourhood.
From Minatogawa-Koen, the Kobe Subway ride to Sannomiya takes about six minutes. That is useful for fitting a local bath into a Kobe day, but remember Minatogawayu does not open until 1 p.m. If you need a morning soak or a larger day-spa setup elsewhere in town, compare awa awa KOBE and Kobe Minato Onsen Ren.
