Iriki Onsen Day Trip: Which Bath Fits Your Visit?
Iriki has a municipal bath, ryokan soak, private family bath and basic Kame-no-yu. Compare fees and hours, then confirm transport before going.
Iriki, in Satsumasendai, suits a half-day built around one bath and a walk through the nearby samurai district. The facilities are small and locally run, and their websites do not all publish the same level of detail. The useful comparison is less about luxury than about what is actually confirmed: shared versus private bathing, whether you can arrive without staying overnight, and how to get back to the station.
At a glance
| Bath | Day-use setup | Published fee and hours | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iriki Onsen Yunoyamakan | Municipal public bath with two spring sources; private bath also available | Adult ¥270 (about HK$14 / NT$55); child ¥80 (about HK$4 / NT$16). 6:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m.; last entry 9:40 p.m. | Closed on the first and third Mondays and January 1; confirm holiday changes |
| Suwa Onsen | Ryokan with walk-in bathing listed by the prefectural tourism site | Official listings conflict: adult ¥300 or ¥400. The property lists bath hours of 6:00 a.m.–9:30 p.m. | Ask whether day visitors may use the full listed window and confirm the current fee |
| Fuchisaki Family Bath | Private room for one group at a time | ¥1,000 (about HK$50 / NT$204) per room per hour; normally 11:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m., last reception 7:00 p.m. | Tuesdays and Fridays open only 5:00–8:00 p.m.; irregular closures, phone reservation advised |

Yunoyamakan: the most straightforward public bath
Yunoyamakan is the clearest choice if you want a conventional day-use bath with published terms.
| Item | Current terms |
|---|---|
| Standard admission | Adults ¥270 (about HK$14 / NT$55); children ¥80 (about HK$4 / NT$16) |
| Hours | 6:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m.; last entry 9:40 p.m. |
| Closures | First and third Monday of each month; January 1 |
| Private bath | ¥1,500 (about HK$75 / NT$306) for one hour; extension up to 30 minutes for ¥500 (about HK$25 / NT$102) |
The bathing area brings two local spring sources into one facility: Azero and Shibagaki. The operator lists different water classifications for them, so Yunoyamakan is a practical choice if you are curious about Iriki’s springs rather than looking for a resort-style spa. It grew out of the former public baths that used those sources. The city’s 2026 feature explains that the hot Azero water is cooled before bathing instead of simply being diluted with large amounts of cold water.
There is one price discrepancy: the city lists the child ticket at ¥80, while the prefectural directory shows ¥70. The city page is the newer source; confirm the total with the operator for a group.
Suwa Onsen: a ryokan bath, not a dedicated public bath
Suwa Onsen is an inn with an established day-bathing option, indoor and outdoor baths, and its own spring. Its official onsen page identifies the water as a chloride spring with a source temperature of 45.7°C. That number describes the spring source, not the bathing pool.
Prefectural listings give conflicting walk-in prices:
| Listing | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| Attraction listing | ¥400 (about HK$20 / NT$82) | Not listed |
| Lodging listing | ¥300 (about HK$15 / NT$61) | ¥140 or ¥80 |
Confirm the current day-use price with the inn before you go.
The inn lists bathing hours as 6:00 a.m.–9:30 p.m., but does not say whether day visitors can use that full window or give a last-entry time. Call ahead if you are fitting Suwa into a tight schedule.
This is a better fit for visitors interested in a small inn and its bathing history than for anyone who needs fully current walk-in terms published in English. The phone number shown on the official site is +81 996-44-3472.
Fuchisaki: private bathing by the room
Fuchisaki rents a private bath by the room, not per person.
| Item | Posted terms |
|---|---|
| Private room | ¥1,000 per hour |
| Regular hours | 11:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.; last reception 7:00 p.m. |
| Tuesday and Friday | 5:00–8:00 p.m. |
| Closures | Irregular; call ahead to reserve |
The page also carries a New Year notice from 2023, so Fuchisaki’s schedule for your date is unconfirmed. Call +81 996-44-3131 for the day’s hours, fee and wait time. Tattoo access in the private room is unconfirmed.
Kame-no-yu: very low admission, very little published detail
Kame-no-yu is listed by the prefectural tourism site as an Iriki Onsen facility. Opening hours are unconfirmed.
| Item | Published detail |
|---|---|
| Admission | Adults ¥200 (about HK$10 / NT$41); children ¥100 (about HK$5 / NT$20) |
| Phone | +81 996-44-4439 |
| Closures | Irregular |
Opening hours, tattoo access and child-specific bathing rules are unconfirmed. Call +81 996-44-4439 before travelling.
Getting to Iriki from Satsumasendai, Kagoshima and the airport
From Kawauchi Station in Satsumasendai, the city-operated crossing shuttle is the main scheduled link. The city’s current route page says the Togo–Kedoin course runs via Iriki Onsen and charges a flat ¥150 (about HK$8 / NT$31). The timetable PDF attached to the page is still marked as revised in 2017, so confirm current departure times with the operator.
The separate Hiwaki–Iriki course goes through Iriki’s administrative center and is not the same route as the Iriki Onsen stop.
For a more flexible local connection, Satsumasendai’s Iriki demand-responsive service, Kinkan-go, runs within Iriki and part of Hiwaki. It costs ¥150 per ride and is open to visitors regardless of residence. Service runs Monday through Saturday, excluding Sundays, public holidays and January 1–2.
Book at least two hours ahead. Trips before 9:00 a.m. must be booked by 8:00 p.m. the previous day. Call the reservation center at +81 996-44-3311 to confirm your pickup point and whether it connects with your train or bus.
From central Kagoshima, take the Kyushu Shinkansen from Kagoshima-Chuo to Kawauchi, then check the local shuttle or demand-service connection. From Kagoshima Airport, Nangoku Kotsu operates an airport shuttle on the Kawauchi line. Its current route page links a timetable revised July 2025, with stops including Iriki Junior High School and Kawauchi Station; check the actual stop against the bath you have chosen, since it may still require a local connection or taxi. The operator warns that traffic can delay the bus and that seats may be unavailable when full.
Driving is simpler if you want to compare more than one facility. The prefectural tourism site estimates about 23–24 minutes from Kawauchi Station, 49 minutes from Kagoshima-Chuo and 48 minutes from Kagoshima Airport. Those are driving estimates, not public-transit times.
For a first visit without a car, a more workable plan is to choose one bath, check both directions of travel, then leave time for the Iriki-Fumoto samurai district. The Akune–Izumi day-onsen guide and Fukiage day-use onsen guide cover separate areas and transport choices; they are not nearby add-ons to this outing.
