Ichihino Onsen: From a ¥150 Sento to Private Sauna Rooms

Compare four day-use baths in Ichihino, Kagoshima by privacy, facilities, admission and bus access. See what to check before making the trip.

Ichihino is a historic hot-spring town in Satsumasendai, northern Kagoshima. Its baths range from a ¥150 neighbourhood sento to private rooms with their own sauna, so choosing by “best onsen” alone misses the point. Decide first whether you want privacy, a low-cost local bath, or more facilities—and check the bus back before you settle in.

Hours, prices and availability can change. The figures here were checked against facility or public tourism information on 28 September 2026; confirm directly before travelling, especially for a private room.

Suiran: book the room for the features you actually want

Suiran is built around private bathing rather than a public bathing hall. It has 11 individual rooms, and the Kagoshima Prefecture visitor guide describes the spring water as 100% free-flowing. Six rooms have saunas, with different setups; some of the larger rooms add features such as an outdoor pool. Those extras are room-specific, so photos of the premium suite are not a reliable guide to the entry-level room.

Suiran suits a couple or family who want a private bath, with sauna access in selected rooms. Prices depend on the room, date and session length; request the total for your preferred time before comparing it with the simpler public baths.

If privacy is not important, the other three baths cost less and make more sense. Suiran is not the default pick simply because it has the most features.

Sekaiichi Onsen: clear water-handling information, two ways to bathe

Sekaiichi offers a shared public bath and eight private family rooms. The facility says its baths use source water without tap-water blending or recirculation. The spring as it emerges is around 50°C; that is source temperature, not a claim that the bathing pool is that hot.

The shared bath is the simpler visit. Body wash, rinse-in shampoo and free hair dryers are provided there. The private rooms have air conditioning and hair dryers, but the facility says soap and shampoo are not supplied in them. Bring your own towels either way, or ask the reception about buying toiletries.

Private rooms are assigned in order of arrival rather than booked ahead. If a family room is essential to your plan, allow for a wait or call before setting out. The official site currently lists a 10 a.m. opening, closing at 9 p.m. on weekdays and 10 p.m. on weekends and public holidays, with Tuesdays closed. Its page also contains older wording about opening hours, so verify the day’s schedule before travelling.

Shimono-yu: a local bath, not a resort visit

Shimono-yu is the lowest-cost option and has operated as a neighbourhood public bath for more than 50 years, according to Kagoshima Prefecture. It closes on the third Tuesday of each month.

Shimono-yu detailCurrent information
Adult admission¥150
Child admission¥80
Hours6 a.m.–10 p.m.

Expect a simple shared bath rather than a lounge, sauna or private bathing room. There is a free car park; the entrance has a step, which may matter if you have limited mobility. Bring a towel and toiletries unless you have confirmed what is available on site.

The bath was once municipally operated, but Satsumasendai says management of Shimono-yu and several other public baths transferred to a private operator in 2016. Old pages that call it a city bath or show older hours should not be treated as current operating information.

Fureai-kan: more facilities for a mixed-age group

Green Land Ichihino Fureai-kan has a sauna, outdoor bath, electric bath and bubble bath. Its price sheet, current to February 2025, lists:

TicketPrice
Adult¥500
Child¥200
Preschooler¥100
Family bath, 60 minutes¥1,750

Extensions cost extra. The facility closes on Thursdays.

It is a practical compromise when one person wants a sauna and another would rather use the outdoor bath, or when a group needs a family room. For a quick, inexpensive soak, Shimono-yu costs much less. For a private sauna room, Suiran is the more specific product.

The Satsumasendai visitor association says the facility is about 15–20 minutes by bus from Sendai Station, followed by a walk from the Ichihino Onsen Iriguchi stop. Check the current route and return departure before committing: regional buses are not frequent enough to leave the return trip to chance.

Getting to Ichihino without a car

Sendai Station is the most useful rail connection. From Kagoshima-Chuo, the Kyushu Shinkansen takes about 11 minutes; a conventional Kagoshima Main Line train takes around 50 minutes. The Kagoshima Prefecture visitor guide says the bus from Sendai Station to Ichihino Onsen Iriguchi takes about 20 minutes. Kagoshima Airport’s shuttle also serves the stop, with a journey of about an hour.

Those are journey estimates, not a promise of a convenient connection. Confirm the bus timetable for your travel date and note the last return service before you enter a bath. Suiran, Sekaiichi and the other facilities are spread around the area, so a car-free visit is easier if you choose one main bath, then walk around the town or stop at the free footbath at Roadside Station Hiwaki Yuyu-kan. The footbath is described by the prefecture’s tourism site as continuously supplied with Ichihino spring water.

For a more facility-heavy day, Fureai-kan makes sense if its bus times line up. For the lowest-cost visit, Shimono-yu is the straightforward option. If you want a private room, check Suiran’s exact room and price first; if you prefer source-flowing water in a shared bath, Sekaiichi is the more relevant comparison.

For other Kagoshima day baths, compare Myoken Onsen near the airport, Fukiage Onsen and public baths in Kagoshima City.
