Kagoshima City Onsen Guide: Four Baths for Different Kinds of Days
Compare Kagoshima’s station-side Myoban-no-Yu, local Tanuki-yu, view-focused Satsuma-no-Yu and Sakurajima Magma Onsen by access, hours and admission.
You do not have to leave Kagoshima City for Kirishima or Ibusuki to bathe in natural hot-spring water. The better question is where a bath fits into your day. Myoban-no-Yu is close to the shinkansen station; Tanuki-yu is a suburban public bath with a cave sauna; Satsuma-no-Yu charges more for its hilltop view; and Sakurajima Magma Onsen works best when the island is already on your itinerary.
The figures below are current published information, but small bath operators can change hours or close for maintenance. Check the facility’s own notice before setting out.
Myoban-no-Yu is the practical station-side choice
From the west exit of Kagoshima-Chuo Station, Myoban-no-Yu is about a four-minute walk. The bathhouse reopened in a rebuilt building on December 15, 2025, with a newly drilled spring. Its current public bath hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; the Kagoshima public-bath association lists irregular closing days. Standard adult public-bath admission is ¥460 under the current prefectural tariff. The rebuilt facility also has six private family baths on the third floor, which require a separate reservation.
The new well supplies Myoban-no-Yu. Its current temperature and pH are unconfirmed; figures for the previous well do not describe this source.
Tanuki-yu is a low-cost detour, not a station stop
Hanano Onsen Tanuki-yu is in the Ishiki area, outside the central sightseeing grid. Kagoshima’s official tourism site lists it as open from 6 a.m. to midnight, with last admission at 11 p.m.; it describes two natural springs, indoor and outdoor baths, and a cave sauna. Adult admission at a standard public bath is ¥460. From central Kagoshima, allow roughly 25 minutes by car, plus time for parking and bathing.
The cave sauna and outdoor bath make Tanuki-yu a more distinctive visit than a quick soak near the station. The trade-off is the trip across town. It suits a half-day with a car or a day when you are already travelling through the area; it is awkward to squeeze in before a train departure.
Pay for the view at Satsuma-no-Yu
SHIROYAMA HOTEL kagoshima opens Satsuma-no-Yu to day visitors for ¥3,500. Bathing hours are 1–9 p.m. The hotel describes a spring drawn from about 1,000 metres underground and an outdoor bath overlooking Sakurajima, Kinko Bay and the city.
Towels and bathing amenities are included. A free shuttle links Kagoshima-Chuo Station, Tenmonkan and the hotel; check the current timetable and stops.
Choose it when the view is part of the point and you want a more fully equipped hotel-spa visit. The hotel’s rules do not permit guests with tattoos to bathe, so this is not the flexible option for every visitor. If the view is secondary, the ¥460 public baths are a much cheaper way to use the city’s hot springs.
Add Magma Onsen to a Sakurajima day
Sakurajima Magma Onsen is a short walk from the ferry terminal. The operator describes its naturally flowing water as a sodium-chloride spring from about 1,000 metres underground. Admission is ¥460 for adults and ¥150 for children.
Bathing runs 11 a.m.–9 p.m., with last entry at 8 p.m. On Wednesdays, cleaning delays opening until 1 p.m. Towels cost extra.
This bath works neatly after the ferry crossing or alongside island sightseeing. It is not a reason to cross the bay solely for a short soak unless the spring itself is your main destination. Check ferry service and bath notices together, particularly on a day with weather disruption.
A note on old Kagoshima bath lists
Older city guides often recommend Ipponzakura Onsen Center as a 24-hour option. It is currently closed for rebuilding, so do not plan around its previous hours. The city and public-bath association publish updated lists; use those rather than copied directory snippets.
For a trip outside the city, the Kirishima day-use guide covers rural hot-spring areas rather than city baths.
