Ibusuki Onsen in Winter: Dates That Change the Plan
Plan an Ibusuki winter onsen visit around Saraku’s December 14–18 closure, New Year surcharges, Tamatebako’s holiday hours and the January 10, 2027 marathon.
For winter 2026–27, put the calendar ahead of the bath list. Saraku is closed for maintenance from December 14 to 18, 2026; Sayuri is specifically scheduled to stay open during that five-day window. From December 29 through January 3, Saraku, Sayuri and Tamatebako Onsen all charge their published special-period rates. Tamatebako also closes early on December 31 and opens unusually early on January 1. These are the details that can change which part of Ibusuki is worth travelling to.
On an ordinary winter day, Saraku remains the straightforward sand-bath stop near Ibusuki Station. Kokoro no Yu is easier to keep indoors if you want several bathing options, though its New Year hours and rates still need direct confirmation. If you are heading south to Yamakawa, build the bus or taxi connection into the plan instead of treating the baths as spontaneous station-side stops.
Put the fixed dates on the itinerary first

December 14–18: Sayuri keeps the sand-bath option open
Saraku’s notice says Sayuri will open through its usual Wednesday closure on December 16. That keeps a sand bath available during Saraku’s maintenance break.

On busy days, reception may stop around 4 p.m.; rough weather can also close the facility. Soap and shampoo are not allowed in the bath area.
The trade-off is the location. Sayuri is in the Yamakawa area, about 20 minutes by bus from JR Yamakawa Station according to the tourism association. That is a journey segment, not a promise of frequent service. Check the current bus timetable in both directions or arrange a taxi before leaving town. On regular winter dates, decide between sand bathing and an indoor soak

Innerwear goes under the yukata if the walk between the changing area and beach feels cold.
Kokoro no Yu is the indoor option, with several pools and a morning session. Its published regular schedule and adult rates are:

Its 2026–27 New Year hours and rates are not posted on the cited page. Confirm them with the bathhouse before relying on it over the holiday period.

New Year rates and the Tamatebako clock
The three outdoor or sand-bath venues publish adult special-period prices for December 29 through January 3:

At Sayuri, bath-only entry also changes from ¥200 to ¥300. Tamatebako’s joint ticket with Sayuri is not sold during special periods. If you are choosing between the two southern facilities, compare the cost of separate entries and transport before setting out; the ordinary combined-ticket calculation does not apply.
Tamatebako is an open-air bath whose main draw is its view across the sea and mountains. Its page lists a 6 p.m. closing time on December 31 and a 6:30 a.m. opening on January 1. The two bathing sides rotate between men and women by date, so check the day’s assignment if one view matters. Transport and the January 10 event
Ibusuki’s transport guide was updated in April 2026 and links to rail, bus and reservation-taxi information. For Yamakawa, check both directions on the official timetable close to your travel date; a missed return bus may leave a taxi as the practical fallback. Check JR Kyushu alerts if strong weather is forecast.
The 44th Nanohana Marathon is scheduled for January 10, 2027. Its organizer lists a reserved round-trip coach for registered participants from Kagoshima-Chuo Station.

A winter choice that survives a schedule change
For December 14–18, keep Sayuri only if its Yamakawa connection and weather status work for your day; otherwise choose an indoor bath or move the sand-bath visit to another date.
