Hakone Ropeway or Pirate Ship Suspended? How to Reroute Safely
When Hakone’s ropeway or Lake Ashi cruise stops, reroute using confirmed transport from your station. Check the last connection before crossing the mountain.
When part of Hakone’s loop stops running, do not wait on the platform assuming service will resume soon. The ropeway, Lake Ashi cruise and road buses can be affected in different places. Base the next move on where you are now, what transport still connects, and how much time remains before dinner or the last bus. If both the ropeway and cruise are suspended, choose one area for the day instead of trying to complete the loop.
Check each operator before leaving—and again in Hakone
Check the Hakone Ropeway, sightseeing cruise, mountain railway and road buses separately. Recheck at Gora, Sounzan, Owakudani or Togendai: weather and volcanic-gas conditions can change while you are travelling. A notice saying “partial suspension” is not enough to plan around. Confirm the affected stations, replacement transport, boarding point and whether Owakudani remains accessible.
Ropeway service, facilities at Owakudani and the Nature Research Trail are separate. A train reaching the station does not mean every area is open. During gas alerts or access restrictions, follow signs and staff instructions; do not cross a barrier. The trail opens only when safety conditions and any required reservation allow it, so it is not a general walk-in route.
Reroute from the station where you are
Sounzan–Owakudani is suspended
Check the current notice for a replacement bus, including its boarding point, expected wait and whether Owakudani itself is open. The alternative can differ by the cause of the shutdown; do not rely on an old bus timetable. If the wait is long, returning to Gora is usually easier for the mountain railway and buses. Eat or visit an indoor attraction there, then head to your accommodation earlier.
Owakudani–Togendai is suspended
From your current side of the mountain, check whether a road bus reaches Togendai or Kojiri and when the next one leaves. If the connection does not work, drop the Lake Ashi segment and return towards Gora or Hakone-Yumoto. Do not ride back to Sounzan first and then cross the area by another bus just to reach the lakeside; nearby points on a map can be slow to connect.
The whole ropeway is suspended
If the shutdown is already known in the morning, plan a half-day around one or two places served by the mountain railway, such as Hakone-Yumoto, Miyanoshita or Gora. If service stops after you reach Owakudani, follow the live operator notice to the side that still has transport. Never enter the suspended equipment area, and do not assume a replacement bus will be provided until it is confirmed.
The Lake Ashi cruise is suspended
At Togendai, check the road-bus schedule to Motohakone or Hakone-machi. Transfer only if the timing leaves enough of the afternoon to enjoy the other shore. If the wait would consume most of your time, stay near Togendai or return to your accommodation. At either southern port, take a short walk nearby instead of racing to the other harbour. Strong wind and wet paths can make lakeside walking uncomfortable, especially for children, older visitors and anyone using a stroller.
Do not assume a Hakone Freepass or another transport ticket automatically covers every replacement bus or entitles you to a refund after a sailing is cancelled. Refunds and substitutions depend on the ticket type and where you bought it; ask the operator or seller.
Match the backup plan to the disruption

After each change, recalculate travel time and waiting time to the inn. Check dinner seating and the property’s final check-in time. If you booked near the lake or Kowakudani, ask whether the shuttle is running and where the closest bus actually stops. If those connections cannot be confirmed, return to Hakone-Yumoto or Gora before dark.
Where to stay if you need to change areas
Hakone-Yumoto: Yoshiike Ryokan
Yoshiike is about a seven-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station, making it a useful base if you return to the gateway town and want to leave Hakone by train the next day. The inn says its six private sources yield up to about 720 litres per minute in total. In-room bath arrangements vary by room; some open-air baths use recirculated water. If you are on the lake side when disruption starts, confirm the road-bus departure and conditions before choosing to return here.
Gora: Tokinoyu Setsugetsuka
The inn is beside Gora Station, where the mountain railway and buses may offer alternatives when the ropeway is suspended. Its indoor shared bath uses Gora spring water; the outdoor shared baths and three complimentary private outdoor baths use Owakudani-Gora spring water. Private baths are first come, first served, with about 40 minutes as a guide—not a guaranteed booking. The in-room cypress baths use heated water, not hot-spring water. On a disruption day, more guests may return early, so a private bath may be occupied.
Kowakudani: Hakone Kowakien Ten-yu
Every guest room has an open-air bath supplied by the property’s hot-spring source. Ten-yu also has shared baths, a complimentary shuttle from Gora Station and a local bus stop nearby. If you are already in Gora or Kowakudani when the ropeway stops, staying at the inn may be simpler than travelling to Lake Ashi and back. Check the current shuttle timetable and contact the inn about dinner if your arrival time changes.
Rework the second day; do not try to catch up on everything
Before checkout, check whether the ropeway and cruise have resumed. Pick one area that fits the live service plan; if suspensions continue, use a route that still reaches the station or bus you need. A missed attraction is easier to absorb than a missed train.
If you have luggage delivery arranged, Yoshiike lists a 10 a.m. handover deadline at the inn and collection at Hakone-Yumoto Station from 1:30–6:30 p.m. If disruption forces you to change accommodation, confirm where the luggage is going; it will not automatically follow you to another property. Keep identification, medication and charging equipment with you. For luggage sent ahead to the inn, make sure you can still check in if delivery is delayed.
