Best Gora Onsen Hotels: Four Stays Compared by Room Bath and Access
Compare four Gora hotels by where natural spring water reaches the baths, room sizes, private-bath access and location.
Checked: September 27, 2026
Gora is a good base if your Hakone plans include the mountain railway, cable car or ropeway. The four hotels below are close enough to share the same broad area, but they sell quite different stays. One gives you spring water in any room, another is almost opposite Gora Station, and two make you choose between a private bath and shared facilities. Compare the room and arrival route you would actually use, rather than whichever hotel has the lowest rate on a booking site.
| Stay | Where you can use natural spring water | Last stretch with luggage | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora | In every guest room; the shared Thermal Spring is a separate, swimsuit-required facility | Free Odawara shuttle, pickup from Gora on request, or a short walk from a local bus stop | A private bath is standard, but an outdoor layout is not |
| Tokinoyu Setsugetsuka | Shared baths and three free, unreserved private outdoor baths | About one minute on foot from Gora Station | The cypress bath in every room uses heated water, not onsen water; private baths are first come, first served |
| Laforet Hakone Gora Yunosumika | The public bath and selected Premium rooms; every Ayano-wing room has an outdoor spring bath | About five minutes from Naka-Gora Station, or request a hotel pickup during set hours | Standard rooms do not have a private spring bath, and there is no bookable family bath |
| Hyatt Regency Hakone Resort and Spa | The Owakudani-sourced public bath beside Spa IZUMI | Call for pickup at Gora, or reserve the Odawara shuttle | No confirmed in-room onsen; you are paying for the room size and hotel stay, not a private spring bath |
Indigo is the least complicated choice for a private room bath
All 100 guest rooms and suites at Hotel Indigo have a tub supplied with natural hot-spring water from Miyagino. The entry-level Standard King and Standard Twin are about 37 square metres, with an indoor bath. Riverside rooms are about 38 square metres and have a private open-air bath overlooking the Hayakawa River; the larger corner and suite categories add more space and different layouts. If fresh air matters, check that “open-air bath” appears in the room name rather than assuming every private onsen is outdoors.
The public Thermal Spring is a swimsuit-required shared bathing area, so couples and mixed-gender groups can soak together. Children under 12 need an adult with them. Current access and day-use charges:
| Visitor | Hours or charge |
|---|---|
| Hotel guests | 7 a.m.–10 p.m.; no admission fee |
| Swimsuit rental | ¥500 (about HK$25 / NT$102) |
| Day visitors | ¥1,500 (about HK$75 / NT$306) |
Check the hotel’s current day-use terms before making a separate trip. The Hakone couples’ onsen ryokan guide compares more stays where bathing together shapes the choice.
Indigo suits couples who want a private soak without booking a particular room tier, and groups who would use the shared swimsuit area. The trade-off is its distance from Gora Station. Access options are:
| Route | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Odawara shuttle | Listed departures from Odawara are 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Seats are limited; reserve at the front desk for the return trip. The hotel does not take advance reservations for the ride to the hotel. |
| Gora pickup | Request pickup between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. |
| Local bus | Take the Hakone Tozan Bus to Miyagino-bashi, then walk about two minutes. |
| Walk from Gora Station | The route has steep slopes and stairs, making it a poor option with a large suitcase. |
Setsugetsuka wins on arrival, not on an in-room natural bath
Setsugetsuka sits about a minute from Gora Station. After a train ride and a day of transfers, there is no shuttle window to work around. Its 158 guest rooms all have a cypress tub, but the hotel explicitly says those tubs do not use hot-spring water.
For natural water, head to the shared bathing area or try one of the three private outdoor baths: Kangetsu, Manten and Hanasumi. They are free and do not take advance reservations. Use whichever is vacant, with roughly 40 minutes as the suggested limit. The baths are available 3 p.m.–1 a.m. and 5–10 a.m. A private onsen is therefore possible, but you cannot reserve a particular time before arriving. At busy evening hours, the room bath gives you privacy, not the same water.
Setsugetsuka makes sense if the station-side location and a small bath-hopping circuit matter more than having a natural spring in your room. Tattoo policy needs an extra check: Kyoritsu Resort’s current general policy restricts tattooed guests from its public baths, so ask the property which facilities are available to you before booking. The room cypress tub is a separate option, though it is not an onsen bath.
Laforet’s room name decides whether you get a private spring
Laforet Hakone Gora Yunosumika has two distinct buildings. In the main building, Standard rooms use heated bath water; selected Premium categories are specifically described as having a hot-spring outdoor bath. The Ayano wing is easier to understand: all 22 rooms have an outdoor hot-spring bath and a terrace. When comparing rates, make sure the room name includes the feature you want. A lower-priced Standard room is not equivalent to a spring-fed Premium room.
The public bath uses Owakudani spring water. It opens 6–10 a.m. and noon–midnight, except Thursdays, when it opens at 3 p.m. after maintenance. There is no private family bath for guests who prefer not to use a gender-separated public bath. Tattoos must be fully covered on the public bath side with up to two 8 × 10 cm seals. Ask the hotel if that will cover yours or if you plan to use the in-room bath.
Without a car, take the Hakone Tozan Cable Car to Naka-Gora, use the right-hand exit and walk about five minutes. The hotel also offers pickup from Gora or Sounzan between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.; call after you arrive.
The return shuttle to Gora leaves at 9:30, 10:30, 11:00, 11:15 a.m. and noon. The Sounzan service leaves at 10 a.m. Ask reception in advance for a seat. Laforet lets you choose whether to pay for an in-room spring bath, but the room category and transport need checking before arrival.
Hyatt is a room-first stay with a shared onsen
Hyatt Regency Hakone has 80 rooms, ranging from 56 to 93 square metres. Each has a balcony or sun terrace. The standard twin has a separate shower area; larger categories add a tatami living area or separate lounge. The official room descriptions do not identify the in-room baths as natural onsen. Families can compare diaper and age restrictions in the family onsen ryokan guide.
The natural spring is in the large public bath beside Spa IZUMI. The hotel identifies it as an acidic sulfate spring from Owakudani. Overnight guests can bathe from 6 a.m. to midnight. Infants who are still in diapers are not allowed, and mixed-gender bathing is limited to preschool-aged children.
Current day-use terms:
| Guest | Admission | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥3,350 (about HK$169 / NT$684) | 11 a.m.–4 p.m.; last entry 3:30 p.m. |
| Elementary-school children and younger | ¥1,650 (about HK$83 / NT$337) | Advance reservation required |
This suits visitors who want to use the bath without booking an overnight stay.
Getting here takes some coordination. Request the Gora pickup by phone; the ride usually takes five to ten minutes, subject to availability. The Odawara shuttle requires advance booking. Setsugetsuka is easier if you want to walk from the station. Hyatt makes more sense when its larger rooms, terrace, lounge and hotel facilities are part of the stay.
Hyatt says tattooed guests may use the onsen if the tattoo is covered with a seal or similar item. If that condition matters to your booking, confirm what the hotel accepts before arrival.
Which one fits your version of Gora?
For private natural water in the room, Indigo is the most straightforward. Laforet can do it too, but only in the named Premium categories or the Ayano wing. If arriving with luggage matters more, Setsugetsuka’s position by Gora Station is hard to beat; accept that the in-room bath is heated water, then use the shared or first-come private baths for onsen.
Hyatt is the outlier: a spacious room and a full-service hotel stay, with natural water reserved for the shared bath. That can be a good fit for families or anyone who expects to spend time in the room, but not for a traveller who wants to bathe privately in onsen water at any hour. Families should check each property’s child and diaper rules as well as its room capacity; “private bath” and “everyone can bathe together” are not interchangeable.
If you are still choosing a base, the Hakone area guide compares Gora with Yumoto, Sengokuhara and Lake Ashi. For other station, bus and shuttle trade-offs, see the Hakone onsen hotels without a car guide or the luggage-first overnight route. The private-bath ryokan comparison covers more properties, while the in-room open-air bath guide explains how to tell a natural spring bath from a regular heated tub. If room-by-room onsen access is your main filter, see Hakone hotels with a natural bath in every room; for a weather-proof stay, the rainy-day hotel guide weighs indoor baths and facilities.
Rates change with dates, room type, meals and cancellation terms. Compare the same party size and booking conditions, then check the full room description: at Gora, the word “private” tells you who uses the bath, not necessarily where its water comes from.
