Guesthouse Sunline Beppu is a good fit if you want a low-key place to sleep and a real hot spring downstairs, without paying for a full-service hotel. The trade-offs are clear: no meals, shared facilities in many room types, extras such as towels cost a little more, and check-in must be completed by 9 pm.

The bathing options include gender-separated communal baths and a family bath. The property’s published information says guests with tattoos may bathe. None of the rooms has a private natural hot-spring bath.

Choose a bed, a private room or an en-suite toilet

The dormitories have capsule-style semi-double bunks, curtains, lockers and charging points, with separate rooms for women and men. They make sense for solo travellers who will spend most of the day out and want to keep accommodation costs down.

Private Japanese-style rooms sleep two to four. Some share the toilets; larger options have a toilet inside the room. A six-tatami room is for two, while eight- and twelve-tatami layouts suit groups of three or four. The en-suite-toilet rooms sleep up to three or four. Having a private room does not mean having a private bathroom, so check the exact listing before booking.

A genuine hot spring, with a family-bath caveat

The guesthouse describes its bath as 100% continuously flowing spring water. There is a communal bath for each gender, plus a family bath for guests who prefer to bathe together or alone. The family bath is arranged after arrival rather than reserved by phone in advance, and the property does not publish a dependable fixed price or guaranteed time slot. If sharing a bath is essential to your plans, factor in that uncertainty.

Sunline explicitly says guests with tattoos may use the baths, which makes its policy unusually easy to check before booking. The source temperature is not the same as the temperature of the tub on a particular day; the property does not provide a current fixed bathing temperature or pH that can be relied on here.

No breakfast, but there is a guest kitchen

Sunline does not serve meals. Its shared kitchen has tableware, a refrigerator and freezer, microwave, toaster, IH cooker, ice maker and kettle. That gives you the option of picking up breakfast or a simple meal instead of eating out every time. It is a shared setup, not a private kitchen in the room.

Towels, slippers and small toiletries may be brought from home or bought or rented at the property. The municipal tourism listing confirms the current check-in window as 4–9 pm, check-out by 10 am, and 11 parking spaces on a first-come basis. It warns that a full lot means using a nearby paid car park at your own expense. Check the property’s own site for the latest amenity prices, since these can change.

The 9 pm check-in cutoff is the detail to build your travel day around. Front-desk hours extending later do not mean late check-in is accepted. If a delayed bus or late flight could put you past the cutoff, choose somewhere with a later arrival window.

Handy for Beppu Station and Kitahama

The guesthouse is in Kitahama, around a ten-minute walk from JR Beppu Station according to its booking information. Its 11 dedicated parking spaces are first-come, first-served, with no guarantee that one will be free when you return after driving elsewhere. Guests without a car can usually keep the arrival simple by walking or taking a local bus, while drivers should have a paid-parking backup.

Day-use bathing is also listed by the property, but its hours and admission price should be checked directly before making a separate trip. If you already have a room elsewhere, do not assume the onsen’s day-use availability from an old article.
