Beppu Budget Onsen Stays: Sunline or Nishitetsu?

Compare Sunline and Nishitetsu in Beppu by bath water, check-in cutoff, parking, towels and the real cost of a Kitahama stay.

The cheaper-looking room is not always the cheaper stay. Guesthouse Sunline strips back hotel services but keeps a free-flowing hot spring and shared kitchen. Nishitetsu Resort Inn Beppu follows a more familiar hotel routine, with an indoor and outdoor public bath and a check-in window that runs later. Towels, breakfast, parking and your arrival time can change which one costs less in practice.

Both are in Kitahama, but they suit different travel styles. Sunline works best if you travel light, can live with shared facilities and want source-fed water. Nishitetsu is easier for a late arrival or an airport/highway bus drop-off. For other neighbourhood options, see the Beppu ryokan comparison, the hotels near Beppu Station or the Beppu seaview onsen stays.

Sunline saves money by leaving more of the trip in your hands: bring toiletries and towels, sort out breakfast, and be comfortable with shared spaces. Nishitetsu costs more for a conventional hotel setup and a simpler late-night arrival.

Sunline: source-fed baths, fewer hotel extras

Sunline has separate public baths and a family bath, all described as using 100% free-flowing hot-spring water. Room options range from dormitory beds to private Japanese-style rooms for two to four guests. Some private rooms share a bathroom, so check whether the room has its own toilet before booking.

Sunline has a shared kitchen and common area; breakfast is not included. Towels and basic amenities are sold separately.

ItemOn-site charge
Bath towel¥200
Face towel¥200
Slippers¥100
Toothbrush, razor, comb or earplugs¥50 each

Bringing no towels adds ¥400 for two towels.

The main hard stop is check-in. The current listing gives a 4–9 p.m. window and says arrivals after 9 p.m. are not accepted; the front desk is unstaffed after 10 p.m. The family bath can only be requested at the property, not reserved by phone. If you are arriving by car, its 11 parking spaces are first-come. Once full, you are responsible for nearby coin parking.

Sunline explicitly allows guests with tattoos to use its baths. Its family bath is requested on arrival and depends on availability.

Nishitetsu: less friction from the bus, a later arrival window

Nishitetsu Resort Inn sits beside the Kitahama highway-bus area. If you are coming from Oita Airport on the Airliner or arriving by intercity coach, the hotel is only a short walk from the stop. JR Beppu Station is about ten minutes away on foot, so rail passengers still have a walk with their bags.

The hotel’s gender-separated second-floor baths have indoor and outdoor pools using Beppu hot-spring water. Its published lodging information classifies the water as sodium-calcium chloride-bicarbonate and describes it as filtered/circulated with added water. Temperature and pH are not published in the sources linked here. Choose Nishitetsu for the indoor-and-outdoor public bath; choose Sunline if free-flowing water is essential.

Check-in is listed until midnight, compared with Sunline’s 9 p.m. cutoff. Confirm the late-arrival procedure with the hotel if you expect to arrive near closing time.
