Tsuzura Rice Terraces and Chikugogawa Onsen: A Ukiha Autumn Day Trip

For an autumn outing in Ukiha, give Tsuzura Rice Terraces the morning and choose one bath in Chikugogawa Onsen for later. The terraces are in the hills, where transport and event-day road controls matter more than adding extra sightseeing stops. If you are not driving, secure both the uphill and return journey before setting out.

The 2026 edition of “Tanada in Ukiha: Higanbana Festival” ran from September 20 to 22 and has now passed. The dates, flower conditions, traffic rules and any shuttle arrangements change by year; treat the details below as a record of the 2026 edition, not a schedule for next autumn.

What to expect at the terraces

Tsuzura’s stone-walled rice paddies cover about seven hectares and include roughly 300 terraced plots. Red spider lilies usually appear from mid- to late September, but the peak shifts with temperatures and rain. Fukuoka Prefecture’s 2026 forecast expected the viewing period to begin around September 20; that was a forecast, not a guarantee that every section would be in bloom.

The 2026 festival was scheduled for September 20–22, from 9 am to 4 pm, with local rice and vendors expected. The city later corrected the event’s one-way driving route: cars were to go up from Prefectural Route 106 toward the Nagaiwa Castle ruins and return via Kawasemi Bridge to Route 106. For a future event, follow that year’s city notice and signs on site rather than reusing an old map.

The flowers grow along the edges of working fields. Stay on the permitted paths and field boundaries, and do not step into the rice paddies for a photograph. Walking from the lower area to an upper viewpoint takes longer than a quick roadside stop; allow a substantial part of the morning, especially when event traffic is heavy.

The 2026 transport detail that caught visitors out

Tsuzura is in Ukiha’s Shinkawa mountain district. Noruto Ukiha, the city’s reservation-based shared bus, serves the flatter parts of town and does not cover the mountain districts. A separate shared taxi normally serves Shinkawa and Tagomori, but its regular operating days are Monday through Saturday; it does not run on Sundays, national holidays or during the year-end/New Year closure.

That mattered in 2026 because all three festival dates fell on a Sunday or public holiday. The event notice did not list the old JR-station shuttle as a current-year service. Visitors without a car therefore needed to confirm another taxi or event transport for both directions before travelling. Do not assume that a service listed for the district will operate on a holiday, or that an old-year shuttle is still running.

By car, let the hills set the pace

On a festival day, give the terraces the morning, then come down for lunch and one bath. Narrow mountain roads, one-way controls and walking time make an overfull itinerary hard to keep. Choose the bath before you set out.

All three festival dates in 2026 were holidays, so Kuwanoya’s applicable adult rate for that edition was ¥800. Private-bath fees do not include transport, food or event purchases. Confirm current terms with each property.

Choose a bath by its actual rules

Kuwanoya lists a public outdoor bath and 100% continuous-flow spring water; tattoos are not accepted under the current prefectural listing. Fukusenka has four private baths and a public outdoor bath whose men’s and women’s arrangements alternate by day. Its stated tattoo rule allows small designs around the size of a ¥500 coin in the public bath; larger tattoos should use a private bath. Kiyonoya is listed as accepting tattooed bathers, but call if you need certainty about a particular circumstance.
