Akebono-yu in Asakusa: A Historic Tokyo Sento with Early-Morning Hours

Visit Akebono-yu for its 1948 timber building, ornate entrance and early opening hours. Check what to expect from this historic bathhouse in Asakusa.

Akebono-yu is one of the rare places where the building is as much a reason to visit as the bath. The two-storey wooden sento dates to 1948 and retains a carved entrance with karahafu and chidori-hafu gables, a coffered ceiling and a wisteria vine associated with Sensoji Temple. Tokyo selected it as a Historic Building in 2025. It remains an everyday public bath, not a museum dressed up as one.

The bathhouse is the attraction

The entrance is the detail to slow down for: the richly carved timber beneath the curved roof, the second gable behind it and the wisteria at the street front. Tokyo’s heritage profile records the current building as a two-storey wooden structure built in 1948. It was designated as a Historic Building in 2025, following seismic reinforcement work carried out around 2010.

The vine usually flowers from late April into early May, though the exact peak shifts with the weather. Outside bloom season, the façade and woodwork are still the main draw. The bath itself is a traditional sento with jet, bubble, seated and “silk” baths. The silk bath looks milky because of very fine bubbles; it is not a mineral hot spring.

Akebono-yu is not a confirmed natural hot spring and does not have a sauna or cold plunge. If you are after those, the nearby Yudonburi Sakaeyu guide covers a bathhouse with documented natural spring water. For a broader first-visit overview, see how to choose a Tokyo sento.

The weekday break between morning and late-morning opening is the main scheduling wrinkle. The adult fee is Tokyo’s current public-bath ceiling, effective August 1, 2026. There is no sauna surcharge because Akebono-yu has no sauna.

The new operator reopened the bathhouse in August 2025, adding longer hours, electronic payment, Wi-Fi and a small place to rest without rebuilding the historic shell. The current public-bath listing does not identify a tattoo policy; if that matters to you, check directly before visiting.
