Sarugakyo without a car: choose one bath, then build around the bus

Plan a car-free half-day in Sarugakyo around the seasonal Jomo-Kogen bus, three bath options and return times. Check the winter timetable separately.

The bus makes a half-day in Sarugakyo possible, but service is infrequent. Plan around the round trip before choosing a bath. The 2026 timetable applies from 1 April through 15 December; winter services use a different schedule.

The Minakami Tourism Association lists a Jomo-Kogen departure at 10:55, arriving in Sarugakyo around 11:33. An afternoon bus leaves Sarugakyo at 3:35 and reaches Jomo-Kogen at 4:09. These are examples, not a substitute for checking the timetable for your travel date.

The easiest first visit: Mantenboshi no Yu

Arrive at about 11:33 a.m., walk to Mantenboshi no Yu and allow time for its three-hour bath ticket, currently ¥950 for adults. Its large bathhouse has indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, rest space and food service; the two bathing areas rotate daily by gender. The route and ticket leave a reasonable margin before the 3:35 bus back. It closes Tuesdays unless the Tuesday is a public holiday, but verify its notice and the timetable for your date.

Mantenboshi has a clear tattoo restriction: people with tattoos, including tattoo stickers and body paint, are refused entry. Its bookable private bath does not override that entrance policy.

The lowest-cost option: Hashiba

Hashiba is beside the Sarugakyo Sekisho-ato stop. Adults pay ¥500 and children through elementary school ¥300. The facility describes a small bath supplied with 27 litres per minute of natural spring water and says it is 100% free-flowing. It does not serve meals to day visitors, so plan lunch separately. If you bathe around midday, the 2 p.m. bus back gives you a shorter visit; the 3:35 return leaves more time, but check where you will eat while waiting.

Choseikan’s outdoor bath has a real access constraint

Choseikan is an option for the cedar forest, Akaya River and valley setting. The adult day ticket for the outdoor bath is ¥600; the indoor bath is separately listed at ¥1,000. The outdoor bath is reached by roughly 80 steps. That is a poor match for anyone with knee pain, limited balance or a winter visit on slippery ground. Choseikan’s English page explicitly allows guests with tattoos; do not extend that rule to the other facilities.

The Jomo-Kogen–Sarugakyo bus fare is around ¥1,100 each way, so transport can cost more than the bath. One facility plus lunch or a nearby walk makes better use of the trip than trying to visit all three. From 16 December onward, replace every sample departure here with the winter timetable.
