Tatsumi Onsen in Nagai: Osaka’s Late-Night Sento, Not a Place to Sleep

Tatsumi Onsen is built around an unusual timetable: it opens at 2 p.m. and does not close until noon the following day. That gives late-night visitors and early arrivals a real bathing option outside the usual evening window. It is still a neighbourhood sento, though, not a hotel or an overnight lounge.

Plan around the bathing window

The bath is closed on Thursdays. If a Japanese public holiday falls on Thursday, the closure moves to the preceding weekday. The daily cleaning break runs from noon to 2 p.m.; “all night” here means a long opening window, not 24-hour access.

Children have earlier cut-off times: elementary-school pupils may bathe from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., junior-high students until 9 p.m., and high-school students until 10 p.m. Children below elementary-school age must leave by midnight even with an adult. There are no rooms or designated sleeping facilities for guests. The lobby has manga and places to sit, but a ¥600 bathing ticket is not a bed or a guaranteed place to sleep. If you arrive on a night bus, book a hotel, capsule hotel or another facility that explicitly offers overnight rest; use Tatsumi for a shower and bath, then continue your day.

Admission, sauna and what the ticket covers

Rinse-in shampoo, body wash, toner, cotton swabs and hair dryers are provided without charge. The front desk and ticket machine accept cards, electronic money and QR payments.

The shared sauna is a dim, quiet “meditation sauna,” with sound, visuals and scent as part of the room. The facility also lists several indoor baths, an outdoor bath with changing bath additives, a children’s bath and a cold bath. You can skip the sauna and still have more to do than soak in one tub. The outdoor bath’s seasonal or event bath additive changes, so it should not be treated as a fixed mineral spring.

There are around 5,000 manga volumes in the lounge, along with drinks and places to sit. The room is useful for winding down after bathing, but the operator does not describe it as an overnight sleeping area. Games and fan-art displays have featured in the bathhouse’s events and collaborations; check its announcements for what is currently on rather than assuming a particular installation will be there.

“Onsen” is part of the name, but the sources used here do not provide a natural-spring analysis. The bathing offer is the sento’s heated pools, herbal additives, sauna and late opening—not a confirmed natural hot spring.

Tatsumi also offers a bookable private sauna. Its current booking page is the place to check the price and available slots; the ¥980 price in the 2023 launch notice is historical. The operator says late arrivals do not extend the session, arrivals more than 15 minutes late count as a same-day cancellation, and outside aroma oil is not allowed. Tattoos are explicitly permitted, according to the bath’s FAQ.

Getting there from Nagai

Allow roughly 8–10 minutes on foot from Nagai Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line or JR Hanwa Line. The “Minami-Sumiyoshi 1-chome Higashi” Osaka City Bus stop is about four minutes away. The bath lists three spaces in front and around seven spaces at a nearby partner car park; confirm parking instructions on arrival. It is a practical detour if your plans already include Nagai Park or the surrounding Sumiyoshi area, but not a station-front stop.

Runners can leave belongings in a locker while using the bath as a running sento. That arrangement is for a run, not all-day luggage storage after hotel checkout. There is also a coin laundry on site.
