Matsukawa Onsen Day Trip: Choosing Between Kyounso and Matsukawaso
Compare Matsukawa Onsen’s two day-use inns by bath layout, showers, tattoo rules and seasonal bus service. Check closures before travelling into Hachimantai.
Matsukawa Onsen sits in the Hachimantai mountains, around 850 metres above sea level. Its milky sulfur water and forest-edge outdoor baths make a memorable stop, but old guides often list three inns when only two currently take ordinary day visitors: Kyounso and Matsukawaso. The long bus ride from Morioka is the bigger part of the day, so decide which bath suits you before setting out.
Kyounso is the easier first visit. Its day-use hours are clear, the bus stop is on the property, and you can add a large-room rest plan. Matsukawaso has a more varied outdoor-bath setup, including a mixed bath and two women-only baths, but has no showers and explicitly does not admit guests with tattoos. Both currently list adult admission at ¥700.

Kyounso’s regular bath is the lower-friction choice if you are arriving by bus or want somewhere to sit after soaking. The ¥900 large-room plan includes admission and gives you until 3 p.m. to rest. Lunch can be ordered there, but only if you use the large room and place the order by 11 a.m.; the inn does not take lunch reservations by phone.
At Matsukawaso, the roofed women’s outdoor bath is useful in rain or snow, while the mixed outdoor bath faces the changing forest. The inn describes its water as 100% source-fed, with two sources at different temperatures. Bring your own towel and be prepared for a simpler bathing setup. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash are available, but there are no showers; the sulfur compounds can corrode metal plumbing.
The bus sets the pace
Iwate Kenpoku Bus runs directly between Morioka and Matsukawa Onsen only seasonally. The 2026 spring–autumn timetable lists:

This is not a turn-up-anytime service: the table has date and service-day columns, and the high-country routes stop running for the season. Check the official timetable for your exact date before choosing an inn or buying other tickets.
The bus costs ¥1,350 each way. With one ¥700 bath, an adult’s basic visit totals about ¥3,400: ¥2,700 return fare plus admission. Missing the return bus can leave a long wait; there is no nearby village with other transport or cafés.
Kyounso’s bus stop is within its grounds. Matsukawaso describes its stop as about a five-minute walk away; confirm the stop name and walking route before travelling, especially in snow. If you drive, check road conditions and seasonal controls before climbing into the mountains. The bus timetable does not run year-round, and the operator’s 2026 schedule ends its direct Matsukawa service by October 25.
The closed inn still appears in old guides
Shofuso, once known for its cave-like rock bath, is no longer an operating day-use inn. Its former business closed in 2023. Older hot-spring directories and regional pages may still show its previous hours and admission price, which is why some pages continue to call Matsukawa a three-inn resort. For a current visit, plan around Kyounso and Matsukawaso only.
Closures matter more than the standard hours
Kyounso has published scheduled closure dates into March 2027. The upcoming full-day closures include October 1, 7, 8, 28 and 29; on October 14 it will not open until 3 p.m. Matsukawaso has its own maintenance closures: on October 25 it is open for day-use bathing only in the morning, then closed all day on October 26 and 27. These calendars are independent, so one inn is not automatically an open backup when the other closes.
The water at both inns is pale and sulfur-rich, but their published spring details differ. Kyounso describes a simple hydrogen-sulfide spring and a source-fed indoor and outdoor bath. Matsukawaso lists two sources at different temperatures and a 100% source-fed supply. Neither page provides current, facility-specific pH and source-temperature figures for every bath, so there is little value in borrowing an older figure from a neighbouring source.
When Matsukawa works as a day trip
If the direct bus schedule lines up with your day, Matsukawa is possible without a car. Give yourself a clear return deadline and do not plan a long hike or another remote stop in the middle. For a first visit, Kyounso’s on-site bus stop and longer bathing window simplify the logistics. Choose Matsukawaso when its mixed or roofed outdoor bath is specifically what you want and the no-shower setup works for you.
