Kusatsu Onsen Hotels for Guests with Tattoos: What to Confirm Before Booking

Compare tattoo policies at Tokinoniwa, La Vista Kusatsu Hills and Hotel Village; ask about the specific bath, since private access and cover seals vary.

Being allowed to check in does not automatically mean you can use every bath. The useful question is what you can still use if the public bath is off-limits—and whether that alternative is an actual hot spring bath.

Clear alternatives: Tokinoniwa and La Vista Kusatsu Hills

Both properties state that guests with tattoos should not use the public bath. Their official FAQs also describe alternatives, which makes the decision easier to assess before paying.

At Tokinoniwa, tattooed guests are directed to three free private baths or the bath in their room. The hotel says its guest-room open-air baths use the Yukawa spring, although they are not continuously fed from the source. The private baths are used without reservations when vacant, and the hotel asks guests to limit each session to around 30 minutes.

La Vista Kusatsu Hills has four free private baths and an in-room hot-spring bath as alternatives to its public bathing area. Its FAQ says the private baths are available around the clock without reservations; check the occupancy lights before entering. The hotel’s room FAQ identifies the in-room bath as Yukawa spring water, drawn when needed rather than continuously flowing.

At either hotel, “available to use” does not mean a particular private bath will be empty at your preferred time. If the in-room tub is your fallback, confirm that the room category you book includes it.

Hotel Village: cover seals are a possible route, not a blanket pass

Hotel Village says foundation cover seals for tattoos are sold at the hotel and Therme Therme front desks. Therme Therme’s facility rules prohibit exposed tattoos, with an exception when they are covered by a tattoo seal. The hotel’s onsen page does not spell out a universal size limit or say that the seal guarantees access to every bathing area, so ask about the size and location of your tattoo and which specific facilities you plan to use.

That distinction matters if the shared baths, pool or other facilities are central to your stay. Do not treat the availability of a cover seal as confirmation that every area will admit you.

For Hotel 1913 or Hotel Ichii, get a direct answer

The current bathing pages for Kusatsu Hotel 1913 and Hotel Ichii do not set out a clear tattoo policy. That silence is not permission. Before booking a non-refundable plan, ask whether your tattoo is allowed in the public bath, any reservable private bath and your room’s bath. A hotel may welcome you as a guest while restricting access to shared facilities.

A short message to send before you pay

Include the tattoo’s approximate size and location, then ask which baths you may use. If you need a cover seal, ask what size the hotel accepts, whether it is sold on site and whether it applies to both the bath and any pool or spa area. Also confirm whether a private bath needs a reservation, has a time limit or uses hot-spring water.

If you are still deciding whether to make Kusatsu an overnight stop, the day-trip versus overnight guide looks at the time and transport trade-offs.
