Sakura Sakura Onsen in Kirishima: The Mud Bath, Day-Use Rules and Getting There

Soak in a sulfur spring, then apply natural source mud as a pack; the mud is not a bath tub. Day entry is ¥800, and private outdoor baths cost extra.

At Sakura Sakura Onsen, the “mud bath” is not a tub filled with mud. You soak in a sulfur spring, then use natural mineral mud from the property’s spring source as a pack. That extra step is the reason to come; if all you want is a quick soak, one of Kirishima’s simpler baths may suit better.

What day admission includes

The operator lists adult day admission at ¥800 for guests aged junior-high-school level and up, and ¥350 for children aged four through elementary school. The price includes the bathing tax. Day-use hours are 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; service may finish early depending on conditions. The facility has no fixed weekly day off and posts irregular closures in its news section, so check the latest notice before travelling.

The regular day-use visit includes the shared indoor and outdoor baths and access to the natural mud-pack material. The private outdoor baths shown on the site are not part of that ticket; the property labels them for overnight guests. Some private baths may also close during the colder months, and one is listed as closed until further notice. If a private bath is essential, contact the property before booking transport.

How the mud pack works

The operator says the mud is natural “yunohana,” or mineral deposits from its spring source. Use a thin layer—just enough that your skin remains visible—and leave it for about five minutes to dry before rinsing. The facility advises keeping it away from the eyes because it can sting. After soaking and washing, apply the mud beside the bath, let it dry, then rinse it off thoroughly.

The published 58°C figure is the temperature of the source pool about two kilometres away, at roughly 850 metres elevation. It is not the temperature of the bathing pool. The operator does not give a fixed temperature for the day-use baths, so there is no useful reason to guess one. It describes its water as a weakly acidic sulfur spring.

It works best with a visit to Kirishima Shrine

The property is on the shrine side of the broader Kirishima area, rather than in the Maruo cluster. Its access page estimates about 10 minutes by car from JR Kirishima-Jingu Station and about 40 minutes from Kagoshima Airport. From the airport by bus, the published route is to Maruo, transfer to a bus for Yokoyama-shita, then walk roughly three minutes. From Kirishima-Jingu Station, Kagoshima Kotsu lists a roughly 15-minute bus ride to Yokoyama-shita, followed by the same short walk.

Bus services are less frequent than city transit. Confirm the current timetable in both directions before setting aside an hour for the bath; the route is easiest when you are already visiting the shrine or travelling by car. The Kirishima day-use comparison covers the other baths and their different locations.

Check two limitations before you set off

First, irregular closure days matter more here because the property is not a spontaneous stop from central Kagoshima. Its news page is the source for day-use closures; do not assume a previous weekday schedule still applies.

Second, the mud pack takes more time than a quick rinse and soak. Leave room to change, bathe, apply the mud, wait, rinse and get ready again, with extra time for the bus transfer or whatever comes next.

If you are choosing between a stay in the mountains and a southern-coast night, see the Kirishima or Ibusuki comparison.
