A No-Car Day Trip from Yamashiro to Yamanaka Onsen

Doing both districts by bus is possible, but it only feels relaxed if you leave room for the transfer. Start in Yamashiro, where the baths and Yunokawa quarter sit close together, then continue to Yamanaka for Kikunoyu and a shorter section of the Kakusenkei walk. The bus timetable, not the distance on a map, sets the day’s boundaries.

Morning: use Yamashiro’s compact layout

About three hours gives you time to walk around the Yunokawa quarter and choose a bath without rushing. Soyu suits a regular wash and soak; Kosoyu is the pick if you have already bathed at your accommodation and want to see the recreated Meiji-era interior.

Adults pay ¥500 at Soyu, ¥700 at Kosoyu or ¥1,000 for the combined ticket. Kosoyu has no showers, taps, soap or shampoo, so it is a soak-only visit. Both baths close on the fourth Wednesday morning and reopen at noon.

The transfer that makes the itinerary work

The current timetable has a 12:43 departure from Yamashiro Onsen toward Yamanaka, arriving at Yamanaka Bus Terminal at about 1:01pm. It is part of the Onsen-Yamanaka route, so confirm the destination on the bus display. Some departures continue to Kikunoyu-mae and Korogi Bridge; others stop at the terminal, from where Kikunoyu is about a 500m walk.

If this departure does not fit your date, don’t assume the next one is close behind. Check the current timetable before you commit to both districts. Leave a little time at the stop and keep the next available service in mind as a fallback.

Afternoon: bath first, gorge according to the clock

Kikunoyu is the anchor for the Yamanaka stop. Adult admission is ¥500; it opens 6:45am–10pm and closes on the second and fourth Tuesdays (moving to the following day when a closure falls on a national holiday). The men’s and women’s baths are in separate buildings beside Yamanakaza.

After bathing, walk only as far along Kakusenkei as your return bus allows. Ayatori Bridge and Korogi Bridge are the familiar points, but the riverside path takes time and conditions can change. Kawadoko tea seating is seasonal and weather-dependent; it runs on shorter hours in November and closes for winter. Don’t make the tea terrace the fixed point of a tight bus day.

One useful return option leaves Yamanaka Bus Terminal at 5:08pm and reaches Kaga Onsen Station around 5:41pm. Other services run later, but treating this as the target leaves room for changing, walking back to the stop or a delayed connection. The last bus is a poor place to build in a bathhouse visit.

For budgeting, the two adult bath admissions total ¥1,000. The station-to-Yamashiro fare is ¥290, and Yamanaka Bus Terminal-to-station is ¥470; the Yamashiro–Yamanaka leg adds its own fare. Check the displayed fare or operator information on the day rather than assuming that a sightseeing pass covers every route.

This plan suits visitors comfortable with several hours on their feet. If someone in the group needs a slower pace, spend the day in one district instead of cutting every stop short.
