Shima Onsen’s Three Free Public Baths: Which One Should You Visit?
Compare Kawaranoyu by the bus stop, source-flowing Kaminoyu and Gomusonoyu in Hinatami; all are open 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
Checked: September 27, 2026 “Free” has a fairly specific meaning at Shima Onsen. These small community baths were built for local residents, and visitors are welcome during the daytime window when the baths are shared with the public. They are not staffed day spas with towel sets, lockers and a lounge. Plan for a short soak, and do not arrive close to 3 p.m. expecting a late entry.
Pick by area, not by price
The baths are in three different parts of Shima’s long valley. Moving between them takes time, and each visit means changing, washing and getting dressed again. Most day-trippers will enjoy one well-chosen bath more than trying to tick off all three.

All three are listed as open daily to visitors from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. The Shima Onsen Association asks visitors to bring towels and soap. Its pages do not give a unified tattoo policy, so ask the association if that will determine whether you can bathe.
Kawaranoyu is the easiest one to fit in
Kawaranoyu stands beside Hagibashi, close to the bus terminus where the Shima and Shin-yu rivers meet. The exterior, interior walls and bath are stone, giving the small building a cave-like feel. There is a little park above it for a breather afterwards.
It is an easy choice after arriving by bus or while walking around the central district. The association does not publish a current source temperature, pH or flow rate for this bath, and its page does not make the same explicit spring-flow statement as Kaminoyu. Its location and architecture are the dependable reasons to choose it.
Kaminoyu has the clearest published bathing detail
Kaminoyu is easy to miss from the road in the Yamaguchi district. It is a modest indoor bath, separated for men and women, with two tubs on each side. The association says the spring flows directly into both tubs in each bath.
That is useful, specific information, but it does not establish a precise tub temperature or prove that the water is never adjusted. The association does not publish those figures on the bath page. Choose Kaminoyu if the spring-flow detail matters more to you than an outdoor view or larger facilities.
Gomusonoyu makes sense as part of a Hinatami walk
Gomusonoyu is at the valley’s Hinatami end, the area associated with Shima Onsen’s origin story. The present wooden bathhouse was rebuilt in January 2006; inside are separate men’s and women’s baths with stone-carved tubs. Hinatami Yakushido and a footbath are directly in front, so this visit works best as a short walk with a bath folded in.
The setting is the reason to make the extra trip. The association does not publish the same spring-flow detail for Gomusonoyu that it does for Kaminoyu, and a shared valley name is not evidence that every bath has identical water handling.
A practical visit
Bring a small towel and soap, and keep valuables with you or secured elsewhere; these are community baths, not luggage-storage facilities. There is no published information establishing that every bath has lockers or a rest room. If you need a longer indoor break, want amenities supplied or are travelling in difficult weather, look at a paid day-use facility instead.
The shared opening window also changes the transport calculation. Visitors arriving in Shima after lunch may have little time before the 3 p.m. close. Check your bus back to Nakanojo before setting out, then choose the bath closest to the rest of your plan. There is no real prize for bathing in all three if it means spending the visit changing and walking between districts.
