Sozankyo in Uchinomaki

Sozankyo’s day bath is a short afternoon stop: ¥700, from 1 to 3 pm. Check with the inn on holiday eves and during busy periods. Arriving after 3 is too late for day-use bathing.

Children pay ¥300 and preschoolers ¥200. The inn has private baths for overnight guests, but day-use access is not confirmed; plan on the regular bath unless the inn tells you otherwise.

What is known about the water

Sozankyo’s No. 2 spring is a sodium-magnesium-calcium sulfate spring. The published analysis gives a flow rate of 273.3 litres per minute and a source temperature of 48.5°C; another page gives 43.5°C. Treat those as conflicting source figures, not as a current measurement of the bathing tubs. The water is supplied without reheating or dilution, flows through rather than recirculating, and the tubs are drained, cleaned and refilled daily.

Source temperature is not bath temperature, and no fixed temperature is given for each tub.

Fitting the visit into an Aso day

The short opening window works best if the rest of the day is nearby or easy to time. Sozankyo is at 145 Uchinomaki. From JR Aso Station, take a local bus toward Uchinomaki and get off around Shōkōkai-mae; it is about a two-minute walk from there. A taxi takes roughly ten minutes. Drivers can use 25 free parking spaces.

Check the bus both ways before leaving the station. The current Aso City timetable shows the local network, while the car-free Uchinomaki half-day guide explains how to leave room for the return trip. If you are pairing the bath with a mountain visit, keep in mind that road access, visibility and attraction hours can affect how quickly you get back to town.

For a later soak, Hotel Kadoman opens at 3 pm and Irifune from 1 pm; see the Uchinomaki inn-bath comparison. The town’s small shared baths are a separate option, covered in the Uchinomaki town-bath guide.

Towel provision and tattoo rules are not clearly stated in the day-use information. Ask the inn if either will affect your visit. Confirm the hours directly before travelling, particularly on the eve of a holiday or in a busy season.
